I've only ever dinghy sailed off Pembrokeshire so thought I'd seek opinions.

My other half and youngest son will be in North Devon for Whit week. I fancy a sailing trip to visit in my Cape Cutter. I'm considering putting the boat in at Burry Port, then sailing over to Tenby for old time's sake. Then over to Lundy for a night on the hook, before then to Ilfracombe the next day. Later in the week I'd try to get back to Burry Port in one go.

Does that sound daft or not?

possibly a bit ambitious in terms of miles unless the tidal streams are favourable.

Do you dry out well ? (the boat, not being personal :) )

Boat has lifting keel and dries out like a Shrimper, infact I've just found a Log on the Shrimper site of one doing Tenby to Lundy in one tack. I'm guessing on the back of that I should be OK if sensible with planning. A Cape Cutter did Lundy to Tenby in 7 hours in 2008.

I'd be happy if anyone wanted to come too.

The sailing log book in the Marisco Tavern on Lundy states that dinghies have sailed from the mainland to Lundy. I think one of them was something like an RS200. So it sounds like it may be feasible. It's not exactly my cup of tea though. I like keels.

I would do it.....can't remember where but we were miles off shore and amazed to find some sea kayaks.Think it was between Milford and Scilly isles.
Just playing with new chart plotter and i fancy taking mobo there for diving, just over an hour from Cardiff full speed but swmbo will kill me with the cost of fuel seeing as Cardiff to Barry and back was 70 quid.
Ps i'm selling the speed boat.....exactly the same as this...

I expect they came from the Devon coast, not the much longer passage from Tenby.

I see no reason at all not to make the proposed trip, subject to the right weather forecasts and sensible precautions regarding safety. The extent of safety precautions is an entirely personal matter so I'm not going to preach on the subject.

Remember Shane Acton. Round the world in a 19' plywood boat with next to no equipment. The Cape Cutter should be well up to the task.

Lundy definitely do-able in a dinghy, I was moored up with someone in a Padstow who used sail across from Bude. Bit of preparation, favourable conditions, and a VHF and you should be fine. Look a the tide overfalls on the charts, the sea can get quite nasty even in nice conditions. Certainly suprised me. But the dolphins make it all worth while.

I still think that you have nearly two tides to get from Burry Port to Lundy, and some pretty precise arrival times are required.

Quite number of other places where you could dry out. Minehead, Porlock Weir, Watermouth Bay, and many small bays if the weather is kind.

Sounds like a good trip if taken steadily and lots of boltholes planned for.

Burry Port to Tenby would involve crossing Pendine Range Danger Area I'd guess. Weekend for that bit would be best as we're really busy this year.

We took an 18ft Catamaran over from Cardiff to Weston S Mare last year, great trip but not enough wind. It took up an hour and forty five minutes so quite fancy doing something more adventurous next time.

Not quite a dinghy, but I sailed my 20foot trailer sailer from Portishead to Lundy a few months ago. Definitely do-able if the conditions are ok. Would concur about a waterproof VHF, would also recommend a PLB as the range of a handheld at sea level won't be great!

Hi Rob
That's pretty much the type of sailing I'm going to be doing this year. My Cape Cutter is 19' and is Class C like yours. Maybe we could do some accompanied routes sometime.
