How fast in the Dark

Re: 20knots : Yes but that the point innit?

I'm a bit miffed about this idea that plod gets to court in the first place. Is there not a trap door or sumate that ejects speeding reports of plod and adding them to less asstute motorists, like ambulance men, or should that be people??

Re: 20knots : Yes but that the point innit?

I'll pass on your concerns to the club on Sat as we have our AGM, and I'm standing down from committe after several years, and see what the members have to say about it? Does that satisfy some of your issues?

Re: 20knots : Yes but that the point innit?

No problem for me at all. And - heh - it's not me that would ever be i the situation i described. Loaded up our flippin boat only does 28 knots absolute tops but range is low. Yours is a different kettle of fish!

But fact is that as far as i can see - and also from your decriptions of your evening sorties - only you and yr friends think it fine or "officially safe" at the speeds you describe.

I do not doubt that you feel safe - and indeed that you ARE safe. I feel safe and have proven to be safe at 120mph in a car and have spent hours if not days at night at that speed or above, and in places where it is not illegal.

The issue i raised was merely that if anything happens then the general population - amongst whom would be judges of the event afterwards - would raise their eyebrows at the idea of 120mph in car or 40knots in a boat - and would (imho) attribute most if not all the cause upon the speed at the time of the incident, and not upon any freak external thing in the road or sumink in the sea or a deathwish nitwit passenger. They'd say that at half those speeds (for example) the accident would not have hapened, or would have been much slower, less lethal and so on - regardles of how much one claims that it was (in your opinion) "safe" and how it's been done lots of times before and so on.

That's all

Re: 20knots : Yes but that the point innit?

You're doing the 40knts bit again. As explained, done once in perfect conditions. Club runs not done at that speed, so don't confusicate issues. 20 knts is quite fine in good conditions in Solent.

Re: 20knots : Yes but that the point innit?

What fascinates me, is the fact that other forumites I meet who think this discussion daft (after previous threads), and who admit they do similar speeds at night safely, won't post cos they're scared of repercussions and being picked on.

I thought this forum was about discussing issues, not just ganging up on someone who explains why many people do what they do, for good reason.

Would be nice if some Advanced Level instructors jumped in here, and explained if when on night part of Advanced Level course, they keep down to 10 knts, and why?

Re: power instructors input

Yes, it would indeed. That's precisely what i asked.

I also specifically tried *not* to pick on anyone, but the form of words is not easy if someone says "i do 50 knots" and I ask "well what about 60knots?" - one either seems cavalier and "hah, wimp!" or on the other hand if you say "really, that fast, i do 20knots?" it seems like disapproval. I suppose it's like being on the motorway : anyone in the way bit of a granny falling asleep whereas the guy who wants to overtake - what a total loonie v dangerous. i didn't wabt that and apologies if it seemed so.

Please do not feel picked on. You just piped up - no prob!

Re: power instructors input

Can you two not have agood entertaining row so as to make this thread a 200 plus one and give me two 200 plus ones on the trot? Or better still go over to the drying legs thread and row there as that needs 20 plus to make the 100..... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Brendan
When it comes to ganging up against people .... may I remind you that you took part in a ganging up thread dedicated to ridiculing me. So its seems to be OK when you are part of the gang! Lighten up a bit and enjoy taking your turn as the butt rather than just being in the gang.

As it happens, I frankly enjoyed the humour and do not lose a seconds sleep over such things. Nor anywhere did I object to the thread. If I am going to take on TCM & Co then I know what I am getting into and he knows what he is getting into with me..

At least TCM is consistent – it has also blown a bit of my gang theory to bits. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: 20knots : Yes but that the point innit?

Not fair. You having recently been to the forum school of etiquet (unwillingly maybe) and being a totally reformed character, leaves some other unfortunate git, in the fireing line. Even if they do stand up like a sore thum and ask for it.

Bingo. Too much "intellectual" bullying on these forums of late.

Gang

I still want to know who's in my gang?! So far only tinstaafl offered to be in my gang by pm, but i believe he's hiding in the toilets again on this one, possibly in a pub in wales somewhere. Which is actually near where Gludy is based innit! I bet he's one of Gludy's gang, a ringer. Now, brendans has his own gang, all of them COBOL programmers apparently.

Re: Gang

Well, your gang is not what I thought it was ... for example Brendan does not appear to be in it, or at least not any longer in it - maybe he thought he was in it but was not - only he did not know it .... or maybe its all a fake defection to form a future mole ..... I am not sure.

Yes I live in Brecon, Wales and there are a fair number of pubs locally any of which could be a hiding place for tinstaafl.

Your gang probably includes some uniformed types with night vision scopes stationed around the Solent and of course there is always the loyal hlb but apart from that I know very little. ... it takes time to piece together the bits of info that I glean.

Don't worry mags, i think you're in the clear on that score! Er, i mean, it's all my fault and very sorry ahem...

Yes, yes. Very witty. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz......

Re: Gang

oh excellent, hlb's in my gang, marvellous. But ...he wasn't in my gang when it came to navigation, was he? Or anything lancashire v yorkshire? Or flybridges or solent or med or loads of other stuff.

Fact is, it might *look* like ganging up but in fact if there's a two sided argument then a third person sort of has to come down one side or tother - PROVIDED that it stays mostly on the subject. If it actually gets really horridly personal they're both wrong and hence no "gang effect".

So, we shd be pretty pleased that the scrap tother day mostly sort of did stay vaguley on track. I mean it didn't branch out into "and you never do the washing up either!" sort of row. Well, not too much. Prtly cos er possibly neither of us do the washing up. Well, i don't anyway.
