How far is too far in your dinghy?

The danger is when on charter! Some charter companies do not advise and insist on removing the outboard when towing so there is a good chance of dunking the engine. However one would know that there is a problem before letting go of the yacht!

On our recently charter in Grenadines we had a solid bottomed dinghy. The dinghy anchor was deep in a locker in the yacht with no chain or rode. There was no spare line for use either. It was very heavy and probably a bugger to row. So when going ashore very conscious of distance from shore to yacht. Of course no-one in Carribean observes RYA guidance of life-jackets, let alone proper torch at night. Frightening considering that huge speedboats roared past without their lights on either.

So during the day, 10 - 15 minutes would be ok. At night prefer a shorter journey and certainly close to land.

Ahem, lets get the terminology correct shall we!!!

What you are referring to is the boat's tender , not something like a Wayfarer dinghy which has been sailed hundreds of miles.

Small hint - to make it clear who you are replying to it is best to quote a bit of their post. Most people use flat mode so they have to guess if you haven't said.

Guessing it might be me - I would have thought an 11 ft tender was quite a modest size for a boat with 7 berths! And it fits comfortably in the davits across the stern - see my signature ;)
