Having got back to the boat in Brighton after taking a boat round to Penton Hook on that well known trickling cess pit known localy as the Thames, (and I refer to the users rather than the water quality). I did a little toting up of the mileage done this year. It comes to just over 1000 miles. Is this a normal amount, below, or above average ??

How many have you done this year ?

Hey.....steady on.....

If you are referring to the users of the Thames as a 'trickling cesspit' I find this far more offensive then anything that has so far appeared in the Raggies v Stinkies Wash arguments - especially as I believe you were a 'Thames Resident' yourself not that long ago.
I trust however that this is an unfortunate grammatical confusion.................... ;-)

From looking at bots a few years old a little while ago when I bought mine, the average engine hours seems to be around 80-100 per year, at say an average of 20knts that equates to 1600-2000 miles.

For me I've done less than that this year as the boat is in the med and so not down every weekend like uk boats, and perhaps less need to travel far to find what I'm looking for.

I can only claim 1500 so far this year, which equates to about 200 engine hours, but I'm a lot slower than you guys, will end up about 1800, when I get to Barcelone.

I go all the way!

I've done about 1300 miles this year but the weather put the kybosh on a lot of early season trips. Normally I do about 2000 miles a season which equates to about 130 hours. Apparently the average for a motorboat is about 100 hours per season

Re: Hey.....steady on.....

Unfortunately you are perfectly correct in your first assumption. We never actually met many of the motor boaters even though the weather was perfect they obviously and wisely, stayed at home or in the marina rather than face the little S**Ts floating around with oars sprouting from their sides.

As you say up until about 18 months ago we were ardent Thames boaters. It is a great source of disappointment that in this short time, through the continued cutbacks and lack of effort from the various agencies. The Thames has degenerated to a virtually unpoliced collection of self-opinionated mind less crapheads attempting to emulate real oarsmen. The operate sure in the knowledge that the powers at be would rather turn a blind eye to their total lack of adherence to the common navigational requirements and their shouted obscenities when other users dare to use “their” waterway.

Alas I’m now fully convinced that the sooner we sell our Thames side property that has given so many years of pleasure to young and old alike, the better it will be. Give me the open sea where even the most cantankerous of yachties are a mere pimple on a elephants bum compared with the fools you meet from a Thames rowing club.

I mean no offence to the average boater on the Thames and wish them as many happy years as we have had. Although unless something is done, and done soon. You will stand little chance of continued pleasure at reasonable rates.

God bless the open sea and may the smoke my burning Thames license be forever lost in the four winds of the oceans.

Chris, ye of short memory, Rowers have always clogged up the river, stopping for a rest and a chat whilst blocking the fairway from side to side. Just a big a bugbear these days are the narrowboats. A gaggle of Geese, A flock of birds, a Pride of Lions, a dose of crabs, an infestation of narrowboats and last but not least a braincell of rowers.

Re: Re; YOU WANNA FIGHT??

Brighton The capital ?? Dear me how sad no wonder that a fight is your first response. Brighton is no better or worse than any other town on the coast. I'm told it just has larger number of sexually challenged individuals residing in certain parts of the town. (Sorry, it's now one of the labour parties cities isn't it). But that's another story. No, it's no better than anywhere else that offers boaters of all kinds the freedom to enjoy their chosen activities without the added encumberance of the ill informed Bureaucrats that have taken over the running of what were once the jewels in the crown of the english country side. The rivers. Gone are the days of kids fishing an playing. Today you need a risk analysis and a dozen pieces of paper to paddle in the shallows.

Use the Rivers as an example of what happens when government departments run by failed cabinboys get the power over normal boaters and their waters. Remember once big brother starts to bring in licences and certificates they've got you by the balls and that's the end of your freedom. Remember the fees used to be split 40% to 60% in favour on the boat owner now it's 70-30 the other way and it will carry on until it's 100% boater if they get their way.

Think very carefully before you vote for licences and registration.

Byron

Although my kids constantly complain with regard to my increasing dementure. I can assure you that do indeed remember the bygone days of rowers and ducks and all the friends we came to know so well. However what I don’t remember is the lock keepers response of “Oh well it is Sunday morning” in response to an official complaint regarding the unacceptable and dangerous behaviour of one of the brainless ones. As I said earlier the control of the river is going to rat s**t. All Eileen and her boys are interested in is “ watch out this could be one of those questions that could show how little I know, best to avoid it” or “does my ass look big in this” Run a river ? Where did that come into the equation. Sorry mate but I remember the days of master mariners as inspectors and lock keepers with generations of experience behind them. People who knew how waterways work. Today all we have is the forelock tuggers who’s only interest in life is to keep the little fat boy in Westminster smiling and count the pension they’ve extorted out of the boat owners. No mate I can remember the old day’s too clearly to want to live with the rubbish that’s handed out today’s licence payers. 2 years ago I wouldn’t have believed that the best view of the Thames is sea reach as seen over your shoulder. Now I can vow that my keel will never again be subjected to Thames water.

A very dissapointed ChrisP;O((

I find that I'm now doing less milage but getting more fun. I've banned my self from the Insolent. So that rules out Pool and unfortunatly Weymouth. The Chanel Isles are sort of ok and so is France. But only go there for cheap fags and to keep the locals at home in check. Cos they always ask how far I've been and seem very disaponted if I've not been to the Med or America! But honestly Devon and Cornwall are much better than all the rest, with loads of places to go in short hops. Can make a week out of the 40 miles to Falmouth and back with different places every night. Used to go on epic cruises , half way round Ireland or up to Scotland. Must be getting old. Still, must have done 1000-2000 miles. Hard to tell cos most in little bits.

No one can force me to come here-----------

Re: Hey.....steady on.....

All our lock keepers went when the running of the Medway was effectively "Privatised".
No more tied cottages for the keepers. All sold off to pad out the return to shareholders.
Rubbish left uncollected in river ,boat sold off and crew deployed in more " useful" (making a profit for the water company)jobs.
Sow the wind............etc etc

Just lets say the best boat in the known universe starts with the letter P
