How far could I go?

Back of a fag packet. Cereal box.....take your pick

Barry, I have checked with Landrover, there is no problem getting the hydrolic brakes fitted, but they say I need a new trailer /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I have only looked at the other one, not even pulled it 1" /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I then need a traile with special brakes, I WISH I had never gone to the boat show, I love my other boat and is no bother, this is a NIGHTMARE /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Also asked about changing the Defender 90 with 400 miles on the clock for a Range Rover, but they say that would just pull the same and cost about £30k MORE if I traded in my 2mth old one /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. I'm off to the pub /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

DONT PANIC (yet)

Your vehicle can tow legally 3,500 kgs (I know I have just done the same thing) if your trailer is fitted with normal overrun brakes (it will be). This can be increased to 4,000kg if you fit a linked brakes

Your boat will probably be about 2,500 kgs and the trialer 650 kg so you should be ok

My sealine S25 is about 2,600 KG and my trailer (Brenerup) is 620 giving my about 3,200 which leaves some loading allowance. I am quite sure my 14 year old discovery will pull it fine.

Hope this helps
Vernon

I've seen several Discoveries towing boats in that sort of size/weight range - 24ft and 2200kgs or so. Not too sure about the Defender...

dv.

Boat is 2,605kg dry, trailer is 750kg, that leaves me 145kg for fuel, sewage, anchor and chain, water AND safety equipment /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I may look at lorries tomorrow /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Launching!!!!!!! hahahahahaha.....Defender handbrake holding that lot!!!.........muwaahahahaha.....you wish!

Is that anywhere near Pie in the Skye?
On a slightly more serious note, I assume you will be keeping the boat in a marina so why nonse about with a trailer. It would be far cheaper and easier to pay for the boat to be delivered!?

Take no notice of him.

It's just Grumpy1 alias, Happy1, alias GC1 doing his usual trick of winding every one up, by being totally rediculas. How long before he gets banned again??? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

None of my friends outside the forum are boaty, so I am relying on some of my good forum friends to advise me and get me 'safely' in the water /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Are you absolutely sure you have any friends? I have friends who are non boaty, but most would donate a right arm to experience a day afloat in a mobo.

All of them would pay to watch you try to tow and launch your four bedroom one steam room boat fitted with state-of-the-art toasting appliances.

I must admit that this is starting to smell like one big wind up.

With such a major launch operation I will not have time to look after newbies, I need experienced personnel for the job, I am lucky to have a couple of very kind forum members ready on standby...............errr...no video recorders though /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I am sure you will get a good full and honest report of the naming ceremony and launch /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Just need a Queen, are you available? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Well, I launched first time with newbies...I moulded them into a crack launching team using harsh words and just a modicum of violence.

Anyway, good luck with your overloaded trailer carrying an overloaded boat being towed by a Land Rover with inadequate brakes, which will be going backwards down a steep ramp, driven by someone who hasn't yet fitted the rear facing reversing video camera.

Pity, because the ride down the ramp with that lot would look good on kirsty's Home Videos.

I look forward to the post launch report.

So where can I get the handbrake upgraded? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

Either:

a) Have someone in it all the time and use the (very good) footbrakes

or

b) Use low range and if you have to leave the cab turn the engine off and leave in 1st gear - far better than any handbrake in any car, period.

Disasters happen in all sorts of vehicles on slipways, problem is usually experience and technique, not usually related to any specific vehicle "weakness"....

I had assumed from an earlier posting of yours that you were going to get it craned in. I strongly advice this. Not only because you are clearly a bit stressed up (understandibly given some of the advice here!) but also even after a good hose down you will still have the possibility of salt water in the brakes. brake cables, frame and wheel bearings.
Once you get on the road you will see how easy it is. Fit caravan type extending mirrors and taking a friend, even non boaty, is essencial.
You have done the right thing. You will look back on this thread in a few months time and wonder what you were worried about.
