On the 10th of this month we switched off the computers, but left the router operative overnight by mistake.
So not likely to be an automatic update by the OP's computers then.

Depends what the OP means by "switched off" - if it is meant as shut down, powered off then I agree, but if it's just a "standby mode" ala phones and tablets then they can continue to operate.
It is unlikely that it is automatic updates, but it could be feasible - certainly in my household with all the tablets/phones and computers ...
I do sometimes .. but only when it's a complicated bit of kit ... most of the time it's plug it in and see what I can do with it ... but then I've only got 4 wifi ap's at home and another 4 at work (it's only a small network)In the words of the immortal bard, RTFM. Only way?
Only problem with that is getting the Greeks to understand the question, never mind actually finding the answer.... It's not that they don't want to be helpful just that they often don't understand their own systems....After all the talk of hacking, I have to say we have probably missed the obvious: could it be a simple mistake like the provider resetting the account back to zero usage? Might be worth asking them and if it's not that, asking what was downloaded - if they cannot or will not tell you that, they should at least have access times and data volumes in their billing system.
