how does wind angle instrument work?

my depth instrument does exactly as you describe, reads an analogue input and outputs NMEA, but the wind instrument -nope!

Are you willing to modify it? Somewhere inside there may be better signals.

in theory yes, but my electronic knowledge is so sketchy that i wouldn't know where to begin!

If you can get a circuit diagram (AKA schematic diagram) it shouldn't be too hard. Plenty of people to help.
