Just out of interest - laymen's terms.

On boat today, mains elect. Running the machine.

Slightly warm air is blown out back and damp air sucked in front.

I can hear dripping as water collects in container.

Is it a compressor / fridge type of thing .

Or is damp air pulled onto a cold plate that condenses the wster vapour in the air? But that would make the space cold and cold air doesn't hold a lot of water vapour, so it must be a complicated compressor thing do you think?

No. I never leave it running if I am not present.

And... dessicant dehumidifiers... I suppose they somehow decide when to heat the dessicant to re-juvenate it once it has absorbed the water? But how does that work? ...absorb the water and then heat the dessicant turning the solid collected water back into vapour? I can't have that right.

Just musings... in case anyone has time to explain. The thing works so that is the main thing ?

Assuming it is a refrigeration type it has a cold plate (evaporator), where the water condenses and drains away, then the air is re-warmed by the condenser heat. Because the condenser rejects both the extracted heat from the cold plate plus the energy drawn by the compressor the air is effectively warmed up.
