How does my antifouling compare to yours?

In 2006 I applied just one coat of antifoul and it was BRILLIANT. We lost just 0.2 of a knot from launch to recovery ... 22 weeks ... 550 miles

In 2007 (again one coat) we were in for 32 weeks and covered 1300 miles . We had trouble getting the boat back to the yard against the tide for haul out!! There was a forest six inches long all over the hull.

I contacted the manufacturer who was really helpful. Their suggestion was that perhaps in 2006 the application was actually being supported by 2005's anti-foul residue and that had worn too thin to give protection in 2007.

They not only suggested that I should ''top up'' the amount of paint on the hull by applying 2 coats ...they supplied 5 litres free of charge!!

2008 34 weeks 600 miles the hull looks as below. Lost about a knot. Heavy slime ... no weed.

To give a more objective feed-back to the manufacturer I just wondered how my hull compared to yours.

The leg was sprayed with Blakes Mille ...not good!

I would absolutely not suggest buying copper powder and mixing it in. No way. Don't do it.

Craned out two days ago:
HULL; slight weed growth on some small areas, with no perceptable effect on performance. Last antifouled 1995-96 with 5 coats ''Copperbot''; very lightly abraded with fine emery paper, a 20 minute job, each Spring.
KEEL and RUDDER: two coats 'Cruiser Uno' in April 2007 and again 2008.
They have never come out as clean any time in the last 20 years. I will stick with Cruiser Uno

You saw our Moody the other day so fingers crossed on Cruiser Uno again for next year. Already bought a tin in case Percy M See sellout and the price goes up.

Prior to the yot we used to keep a stern drive rib in Halsar, never did find a good solution for an aliminium stern drive. Trilux was rubbish. We were so disappointed a complaint went in to International. They came a visited the boat and gave us another 3 litres of Trilux /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Sadly no no idea what you can do about the leg.

BTW in addition to dredging the living daylights out of Portsmouth Harbour this year they have also been bringing in gravel to dump on Hayling Island from the Eastern Solent. All that muddy water is going in and out of the harbours.

our boat also on mooring in porstmouth harbour (hopefully still in view from bav 34 windows) and we have scrubbed twice as growth awful this year - 2 coats of same manufacturers as last year but allegedly stronger version and scrubbed in july pre summer cruise and then again sept as growth in time post cruise horrible - have spoken with manufacturers who have volunteered to inspect when we are out for winter - wish mine had been as clean as any of your photos - haven't used uno and if photos above are typical after season afloat looks without scrub looks good?

Yuk, I would be asking for my money back if I had to scrub twice a summer. What were you using?

We did start to get green weed on the water line in April which I scrubbed off with a brush but it came straight back again. The previous coat was Micron Extra which claims two years but clearly it wasn't working with green weed after 9 months. I wonder if the scrubbing is the problem?

It seems such a lottery, why can't they make a paint that does what it says on the tin /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Anyway Uno for us again next year, probably May time.

The implied question is: what is normal fouling? No one gets their boat back at the end of the season looking like it just went in.

I offer you this observation from having a boat on the east coast in marina and open waters for over 20 years: expect slime on the hull and barnacles on the stern gear.

Weed build up - you moored in open river / didn't move your boat much. Moving the boat frequently, in my expeience, activates the antifoul paint. Is there a paint regime that can really protect against heavy fouling all season long on a river mooring? Doubt it.

Marinas have their own regime - closed ones with little water circulation accumulate so much toxicity that slime is the worst outcome.

I use one coat too, and two for the first foot below the waterline. And I move the boat quite frequently over the season - slime is the routine outcome. I have learned to live with that.

seajet emperor this year - shogun previous couple of years and it has been ok but emporor was on very special offer and was supposed to be stronger - but - seemed to have lost all its strength by mid summer following march launch and regular use most weekends

Actually I have strong views in favour of doing it. I just thought (for some reason) it wasn't allowed and wanted to get the message across without seeming to advocate something I thought wasn't permitted. I guess ironic comment in a text based medium doesn't work.

I used Blakes Tiger succesfully in Chi harbour for a number of years, and had very little fouling on my tidal mooring except where the mud wore through the coat towards the end of the season. However this year I had to scrub in June, and again just recently to remove heavy barnacle fouling. It has been suggested elsehwere that there was a dud batch of Tiger on the market - if so, I had some.

Well that's ok then cos I did just that this time last year, mixed copper powder with trilux. So far with boat in for the last year, only some slime, no weed or barnacles.

Will definitely do it again when I need to, but hopefully will be good for another year yet.

I guess you must be moored close to me as there is a Dehler a couple of boats away.
I used Cruiser Uno this year after several using Micron Extra at outrageous cost. Luke at Fareham had a good price for the Uno, which I to have just bought some more of!
I got GBY to scrub late in the season as I was hoping to get the best out of the old girl in a race, which has left me paying nearly the same as using Micron with a better result.
