how do you size trailer bearings?

Hi Guys,

I need to replace my tailer hub bearings. Not the whole hub, just the bearings

I find many links to things that look right but I don't understand what the leasurements refer to so I am not sure how to check if they will fit.

Can anyone help

e.g. what is 4 inches and what is one!

In that example 4" is the PCD of the wheel fixing nuts. Not what you want or need to know.

If you are JUST after bearings, go to someone like bearing boys and measure the bearings you have to find a replacement.

Great website shows you how to size up they do all size and type of bearings at discount prices, seals the lot. I use them mostly for agricultural stuff, dunno how I used to manage without them.

The bearing size should be stamped on the side of the outer race.

The bearings in the hubs at present should have numbers on them that will identify them

You will most likely find that number on a website and be able to order direct replacements

If not contact someone like bearingboys, or simply bearings telling them the number on the existing bearings

The inner and outer bearing may not be the same size. They probably are but check

The dimensions you are seeing are the inside diameter (ie the shaft diameter), the outside diameter ( the internal diameter of the housing) and the width.

However you also need to know the type of bearing and the sealing if any. There are many types of bearing also imperial and metric but all are identified by the number

Have a look carefully on the side of the bearing , usually you will see a number consisting of both letters and numbers.
This can be decoded to describe not only the size of the bearing but also the construction , load rating , seals etc.

You should be able to order exactly the same thing providing the bearing is generic. For a trailer bearing it probably is.

Take a set to your local bearing shop, they will sort you out and probably cost less than ebay

They seem to sell Timken (which are excellent) but may have cheaper.

Sometimes the bearing shops sell complete hubs that work out cheaper than the replacement bearings/seals etc. on their own.

Take your old hub to the shop and see what they can do for you.

You take the bearings to a bearing shop and they will recognize them immediatly.
I had a French Trailer that nobody had heard of. I took the bearing to a bearing shop and I bought a full set, inner, outer, oil seal for £8.
Even if there are 20 Trailer Manufactures there are only about 3 manufacturers of Axles.
My Present Trailer a Indespension Super Roller Coaster shares the same Axle as my Farm Trailer made by Ivor Williams. So the bearings, brake shoes are all the same.

Something worth thinking about when replacing bearings, as mentioned, sometimes it is just as cheap to replace the complete hub. This can be important, as an example, on an old trailer of mine, the PCD was a strange one, quite rare, the tyres were shot as well. I replaced the hubs and bearings from indespension, i purchased hubs with 4 inch PCD, these are very popular wheel sizes. After this, it was easy to obtain wheels and tyres cheaply or even freely if you neighbours cars were 4 inch PCD!
