How do you secure your mainsail onto your Boom?

I have a length of 3-strand rope with about a foot of shock cord attached to one end. At each end of this I have a snap hook. Every couple of feet is a webbing sail tier simply pushed through the lay of the 3-strand rope.

Before furling the sail, this assembly is stretched under the boom from the gooseneck to the after end. All the sail tiers are then hanging down in the right place, ready for use.
I use a similar system except I use bungee ties similar to the 'Trem Millipede Sail Tidy' instead of webbing sail tiers.

I have the same system as Stemar...elastic suspended under the boom with hooks. Works a treat, cost pennies to make and yes I still have both eyes :)

I use one line. One end is secured to the mast. When the sail is furled, the line is looped up over the sail, then under the boom, a loop through the top loop and repeat. Looks very neat. When you come to unfurl, you pull the end of the line and the whole lot comes undone. The line is hanked and stored under the boom.

I used to have bungee sail ties, but I was always scrabbling round trying to find them all, and trying not to drop them overboard when putting them on. Those ebay ones look a real fiddle trying to get the webbing through the eye with one hand. I found the bungy/ball things worked well.

That is exactly what i use.Cant get your eye out with that.

I posted this warning re:bungees with hooks, it is especially relevant for their use as sail ties
"Interesting thread on hog rings makes bungee very useful. But be warned using bungee with steel hooks attached has a potential dangers. A good friend of mine was attaching some gear to a roof rack with hooked bungees when the thing slipped flew into his eye, resulting in many weeks in and out of hospital with operations and loosing the eye. It could just as easily been a sail tie use or something else on the boat. Probably higher risk on boats due to unsteady movements. I got rid of all my hooked bungees, plastic hooks may well be just as damaging to an eye."
Plenty of other uses around the boat but without nasty hooks on the end.

Exactly what I have, works a treat.

After years of tying the main down and using a cover I wondered why I bothered, until last week
Returned to the boat, half the cover blow off, zip undone ??? But main still secure

Yeh, bungee cords, ban them from your life / eyes for sure :(

Sounds fine, but depends on what the circumstances are when you need to stow the main. F2 trundling back to port, you can zip things up no bother. Getting out of order, 2-4m seas 25 Kts plus , sail ties are a godsend if not as sophisticted. You can tidy up afterwards. There is no easy way of doing up a zip on your own on the coach roof with a decent sea running....

Hooks are not a good idea on bungee, I use these

Hello Gents,

Each time I furl my mainsail onto the boom I secure it with several short lengths of 6mm cord. Thinking there must be a better material to use I have found this on Fleabay, which seems ideal for the job:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161561709022?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

The price seems very reasonable, (have to check on the postage from the US), but what do other Forumites use for this job?

Thanks in advance.

Geoff

I use a "millepatte (millipede) http://www.amazon.fr/Ferlette-mille-pattes-pour-arrimer-grand-voile/dp/B00D7QC3WW together with a sail cover.
