Came in on saturday evening from a weekend of anchoring in the Swale and shock horror my shackle attaching Anchor and chain was completly open and about to fall off?

I did use to have a metal wire going through it ! It must of fallen off?

What do guys do? I do anchor alot since I do not like to pay for moorings !

Tom

Shackle, tighten up solid, GALVANISED wire the pin to the shackle, turn it over and take a centre punch and hammer, punch the end of the shackle pin into the body of the shackle, it will not unscrew of its own accord. But can be undone by removing wire and unscrewing the pin with a big spanner. Or get a galvanised bolt to fit the shackle and put a galvanised nylock nut on the end of it, bingo!

Agreed, especially the bit about peening over the end of the shackle pin.

I dont like to depend on a threaded connection with a bit of wire to stop it undoing so I use a Kong Connector . Swivels as well to help the anchor come up the right way.
It must be correctly sized though for the chain you are using

Be sure that the working strenght of your connector is AT LEAST as strong as your chain..
If using a shackle always use one size bigger than your chain (ie shackle 12 mm for a 10 mm Chain)

What about a rigging toogle?

Quite the opposite actually. Get the right size and they look pretty robust. I've fitted them on a few boats now and never had a prob

seconded Barry, - wondered what they were all on about! Kept quiet though as I didn't want to sound like a cowboy. Lots of salty seadogs will now give us a hard time for allowing corrosion to get upper hand/ not keeping boat bits shiny enough.

Mixing stainless with mild steel ( anchor &/or chain ) is not a good idea. Use centre punch and strong plastic cable ties, they don't rust.

you recomend stainless chain for use with a stainless anchor then?

seriously having the metals in contact/rubbing over a small area isn't the same as screwing a stainless bolt into a mildsteel nut.

As with all things to do with your anchor and rode it should be checked from time to time for security / wear /corrosion anyway and it will probably outlast an AWB anyway (if it doesn't get lost somehow!).
