Re: personal flares

I think so too TCM and your comment might prompt me to get some.

I am extremely sceptical of all the classy pre orchestrated manoeuvres in any but mundane conditions, in which case the whole thing is a doddle anyway. Maybe it should be like American Football - MOB, the skipper gives a particular call or sign and the crew knows it is going to be a gybe, drop this, hoist that, start the engine move. Another sign means don't drop that but drop this and if I give a whistle we start the engine move, ... etc, etc.

The sea is not that kind or cooperative in my experience.

MOB - you\'re joking, yes? plus the silence

The other point, relating to the reality of MOB's is that when you hear "Man Overboard" (except in an RYA exam) the first reaction is that it's a joke, a silly prank specifically designed to spoil a nice kip. Or, another crew says "ooh, he's fallen in". Our crew spent two seconds saying erm, should we say man overboard now, do you think? - and then someone else said you shouldn't make silly jokes, and someone else saying "you're not kidding, are you?" and more seconds wasted with "no no, I'm not kidding honest" and then more seconds on those who did 't see the man go overboard actually looking back to check ooh shit, my goodness yes some one IS in the water, they weren't kidding, better go back down again to turn that engine battery on...

All this means that, by the time you all thought, OK, this is not a drill - the MOB is lots and lots further away than any fender ever was.

Back to jimi's example - this guy is taking a leak, yes? So, would you be watching him? Of course not. Fact is, unless someone is doing some iffy deck work (and clipped on) we don't actually watch everyone all the time, or even any of the time very much really, especially when (say) coming in towards marina and everyone knows their tasks, get fenders, lines etc etc. If someone on deck suddenly WASN't on deck - my first reaction would be that they've gone down below (which 99.99% of the time is true0 and much more likely than over the side.

From a height of one metre i belive it takes only a tenth of a second to reach the water. In the same way as cars in real life do not explode if they are chucked down moutainsides (unless fitted with explosive charge) , so MOB's do not shout out a hollywood-style "Aaaaaaaaargh!" as they go in.

Re: personal flares

Does, doesn't it.

With all this talk about men falling over the side while having a tinkle, I did enjoy the name of your boat!

Re: MOB - you\'re joking, yes? plus the silence

think in real life, if you go over the wall when short handed in any sort of sea then you'd better hope St Peter will let you in!

My offshore scenario was realistic and in fact where its only two up, often one will be asleep and the boat will be on autopilot. If you lose sight of the MOB the only hope is the MOB button and a helicopter!

I'd also hoped to highlight two things
1) the danger of tinkling over the side! —an inordinate number of male drowning victims are recovered with their flies down.
2)Potential danger of switching engine batteries off when under way.

IMHO .. much better to ensure that you stay on board.

Re: personal flares

I guess you are right - Maybe that is why it has come to be known as Man Overboard rather than Woman Overboard.

{Whoops, I see Jimi has already done that one - sorry}

Pen flare gun and pack of 5/6 flares costs about 23 quid. Have one in my life jacket on a lanyard. You can't even see it's there until it inflates
