How do you measure a boat

Best way to measure LOA is when the boat is out of the water. Drop a line with a weight on it from the most extreme point on the bow to the ground, now the same at the stern. Then just measure between the two weights on the ground under the boat, this should give an exact measurement! The same can be done for the width.

Does this still work if there is a strong tide running ?
