Just been to see my engine stripped down and it was not pretty. Piston No.6 looks like it had mushrooms growing out of it aswell as having a bent rod and half an exhaust valve. Pistons 1 & 6 are scarred to hell and a broken piece of pipe which squirts oil under the piston to cool it down had broken off and floated around the sump.

Apart from that everything is perfect, the other pistons look like new as do the valves etc etc all totally clean and carbon free.

Awaiting Volvo head office diagnostic before warranty is honoured.

No enzymes do the feeding, dont forget peoples this prob was caused from underneath the piston.

So yer pissed 'n broke eh? (Spelling?)

Are you saying it seems like the oil cooling jet hit the piston and punched a hole in it. Difficult to see how that could happen. It does make one wonder about KAD engines. We do hear horror stories, yours and KevB's turbo a while back.

I know of about half a dozen peeps who have had new Yahama diesels in Fletchers for a year or more, no problems that I've heard of. Maybe grey is better than green.

Hi Geoff, nah it didnt punch a hole just cooked the piston to melting point.

Yes I am starting to worry about KAD engines but it wasntmy Turbo that had problems a while back, this is the only major problem I have had and boy it is major.

Are you back in the water yet?

Hi Dom. Ah, lost flow, no cooling, ouch!

I guess 90% of sub 30ft boats I look at have KAD engines, still like the Galia 777 when I can scrape readies together. But of course, it comes with KAD43, assuming diesel. The other side of the coin, there are so many KAD's around, even if 1% give trouble, that's quite a few engines. I know of quite a few people with KAD's that havn't missed a beat for years.

Yeh, out and about on water, done about 150 miles this year up down the coast. Still bunging the Soltron in, trouble is, you get used to it! Are you still coming over on the date you mentioned?

So... unless I've missed something, what do you think caused this? What was goin on at the time?

Are there any lessons from it (apart from thinkin about other colours of engine)
