How do the French get away with it

[ QUOTE ]
I love the French attitude. The whole point of France is for the benefit of the French people.

The whole point of England is as a place to do business. "A nation of shopkeepers" really was an insult, no matter the spin then applied.

But maybe it is my Norman roots speaking? or my a#se /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Or both ?

Loved it !

In fairness, I think we are only talking about a small but still significant part of the French people. Some might even dare to say backward when compared to other parts of Europe.

Whether we like it or not you cannot escape the global market and the many interrelationships . Perhaps no bad thing if we can still retain our identities without resorting to wall to wall self interest.

Like most things, it will blow over and we will still enjoy our mussels and cruising grounds. The big loser's are of course the fish. Fisherman always seem to think that they are a special case and should be massively compensated. Why ? when the rest of the normal working population isn't ?

In the UK we just can't get our heads round the idea that if something causes you loss and you protest to get compensation - you will get it - because that the French way.

The UK way is for GB or whoever is PM to tell us like daddy now go away children and play with your toys and leave ripping you off financially to us professional politicians - and we let them!!

UK banks did'nt even need to protest!

Absolutely correct. Seen it happen so many times. The french do it better and make their protest felt.

The difference being that the French government do fear their people, genuinely. In Britain all governments call in the plod to get them out of their mess and we as a populace accept that, in France they woudn't . I do, however, make an honourable exception to the Poll Tax riots which showed just what the British people can do if they put their mind to it. It also achieved the desired outcome.

David, it's not the roots, it's the other one! Sarkozy, the current French top man must go down as the most arrogant, self serving president the country ever had. Even worse than de Gaulle. However, in my experience, strikers in France tend to enjoy a strong level of support from the people, even if they are inconvenienced, I guess because they know that a concerted sharp action is likely to bring a quicker resolution. The Brita tend to drag it out to the point of impasse and then agree to what was offered at the start -- guaranteeing a future dispute over the same ground.
