or would i damage the hull with this???

You need 'hair dryer' levels of heat, not heat gun, or you risk charring the GRP. That combined with a plastic scraper should do it. Don't let the scrapings adhere to the deck.

For any residue I have heard that 'Sticky Stuff remover' works well. You can get it from Lakeland.

The steamer would probably work OK.

Ruffles had yellow and red go-faster stripes. The yellow peeled off easily but the red had been degraded by sunlight and came off in tiny flakes.

I found the best tool to be a sharpened pallette knife and a lot of patience.

I found petrol to be a cheap and effective solvent for the sticky residue.

Edit: Moral is to remove degrading stripes before they get too bad!

Old plastic stripes

Boiling water from a kettle or steam rfom a wallpaper stripper will soften both the glue and the old plastic. Hair drier is also good but hot air gun may damage the GRP. Second the petrol for removal of glue traces, quick cheap and evaporates easily, just don't smoke while cleaning.

3M Adhesive Remover.
Expensive but it works abd a tub will last you years.
Also the only thing that removes masking tape that got wet
and was left on too long.

I did this last year. After considering chemicals, hot air and hot water I tried the simplest, kettleful of hot water and a blunt scraper. The letters came of surprisingly easily with a bit of persistence plus no risk of damage to the hull through excessive heat. I then cleaned off the glue residues with 'Astonish' kitchen cleaner before applying the new decals. It was only after standing back to admire my handiwork that I realised that I had a spelling mistake. I've learned to live with it.

I used a heat gun to remove ancient go faster stripes on a Hunter Horizon. There were quite big areas of blue stuff very faded and partly missing.

The hear gun on lowest setting combined with a plastic fish slice did it incredibly fast and incredibly easily, once the rhythm was right it just fell away with no damage to the GRP. All that remained was a sticky residue which easily wiped away with tiny amounts of acetone.

DO NOT use any form of Nitromors including the stuff specifically for fibreglass. The Nitromors tends to turn the tape into a sticky gooo and the dye permeates the gelcoat...permanently. The benefit of the Forum is that you can learn from other people's mistakes (mine!!!!). As others have suggested, use a heat gun on a low setting and apply....PATIENCE!!.
