Go to maplin or radiospares (RS components) and get a 7803 . The left leg goes to ships 12v positive, the middle goes to common negative, and the right one is a stabilised 3v output. Throw away the batteries and connect it direct. 78xx come in many voltages ie 7809 etc. My boat and shed are full of them, I even use them to stabilise the laptop supply on the boat.
