I have been given an old single lever control box with cables that has been used in the past but don't know what engine it was used with, hopefully I can hook it up to my mercury somehow. The control box has 2 teleflex cables that have plastic ends with a hole on each at the ends. Hopefully someone with some knowledge can guide me on what brackets etc I need to connect these to the outboard. It looks like one cable somehow connects to the shift lever under the hood and not sure where the other goes.

This is my first time working with outboards as you can probably tell lol

Bad news. Virtually every model of outboard has a dedicated fitting kit. The one for the 4/5/6 HP Mercury 4 stroke costs about £200. The motor is the same as the Tohatsu/Mariner so you can buy the same kit for about £140 as a lower value brand item.
Sounds as though you have an older 2 stroke model.
Be very careful of buying secondhand kits from ebay, etc. It will likely be the wrong one or missing parts. Without a fitting guide you will be baffled. Unless you see it working on a motor stay clear.

One cable goes to the shift lever. The other to the throttle.
It may be the cables will need replacing to suit the motor, but usually they are OK.

Thanks for your reply. I have never worked on an outboard before but I thought there might have been a universal type cable bracket and connectors to fit them. Guess I will have to source a dedicated fitting kit

What usually happens is that the twist grip throttle cable and brackets are discarded and the remote throttle cables and brackets (internal to the engine, not the remote cables themselves) replace them.

Ok dealers have told me there is not a kit available for my outboard but the attachment kit from a bigger hp mercury of similar age might work. So I decided to try make up custom brackets and have successfully made one that connects remote cable to the shift lever but struggling to come up with a solution for the throttle because when i push the lever on the remote it pulls the throttle cable back instead of forward which i need it to do. Anyone any ideas ?

Update

I have came up with a solution that might work. Going to try constructing something along the lines of this.
