Previous posts have suggested that placing a mobile phone too close to a GPS (especially a H/H GPS with built in aerial ) will seriously affect the GPS.
How close is close ? 2 feet ? or what ?

and how do you tell if the GPS has been affected ? - Does it show ? Is it simply unable to aquire satelites or is there something more subtle ?

By experiment I have not had poor aquisition with a Garmin 12 and a Nokia but it might have had other affects.

All info. gratefully received

Stephen

Is this due to concerns over the GPS signal being swamped by the Mobile phone signals?
Mine and other crew mobiles do not seem to affect my Garmin fixed or Handhelds even when placed next to them, but large ship radars do swamp both when I have bothered to put the GPS on. Persononally not too bothered about this as the subsequent bleep alarm tells me something large is near me.

My guess would be very close indeed. I regularly use my Bluetooth Phone within less than a foot of my GPS enabled PDA( Built in aerial & weak signal because it's mounted inside the car), with no adverse effects whatsoever.

I have always understood that the problem is associated with the large pulse of energy emitted by the phone when operating, affecting the electronics rather than the signal. My mobile holder is located about 3 feet from any of the instruments.

My cars handbook says to switch your phone off whilst inside as the signal could affect the cars computer systems.....though I dont bother and it never has.

How close does a ship have to be before it knocks your GPS out then?

Re: how do you tell

She doesn't need the gps, she's got your phone tagged, and is tracking it online ;)
