It surprises me how often people have a fairly good grasp of the rules that apply to 2 vessels in sight of each other but dont appreciate that the same rules dont apply in fog.

Ask any radar instructor. The surprise is when you come across someone who does know the difference.

Graham. You are of course quite correct about the give way vessel in fog (no vessel ever has a right of way) and my comment was a bit of a sweeping generalisation.

But I always reckon that I am the give way vessel when I see anything big in good vis so I dont really do anything much different in bad vis.. And since it is really hard to judge the risk of collision by eye, you are in as good a position in practise doing it by radar as by hand bearing compass. In short, when it really comes down to the practicalities, I am not sure there really is much difference. certainly not a huge one. IMHO of course.

Re: Puilladobhrain

On the other hand if you stuck in a few wrecks at the entrance to make nav a bit harder that would do away with at least half the crowds.... if they attempted it they get wrecked too.. I think I would add MORE rocks just for the hell of it!

Forgive me. I am sure you are right, but perhaps you could enlarge on where this inaccuracy is?

I have just refered back to page 30 and 32 of the Feb issue where the two places you refer to seem to be quite accurately placed. What am I missing?

Now that I've actually seen the Feb YM, the wee maps are OK. It's the description "Western Isles" that's wrong. They are somewhat to the west. "West of Scotland" would be more appropriate.

I hope this post is at least slightly tongue-in-cheek.

While a headline writer clearly slipped up, both the opening chart and the detailed chart as well as the text is accurate and clear about the position of these two anchorages. I hope none of our readers are sufficiently 'dumbed down' to be mislead by the piece.

In passing I hope other readers will agree that, under Paul's editorship YM has become increasingly informative and relevant while adapting to the needs of the modern yachtsman.
