due to the ever rising prices charged by London restaurants, a friend's estimate of the cost proved woefully inadequate. After a day of constant resource depletion at the LIBS, a tip of 5p was given after making good the loss, my friend having long since departed.

I thought such a tip acceptable in the circumstances as why shouldn't the restaurant staff share in our misfortune? I could have bartered a bit of marine chandlery but thought twice having lugged it half across London and there wasn't anything I though particularly interesting to a restaurant but who knows?

hm, a small lump of teak might well have been an acceptable gesture. Or possibly a selection of brochures might have saved the restaurant staff the trouble of traipsing around LIBS themselves?

Is that like the miserable sour faced taxi driver who drove us up and down the street looking for our hotel when we came up to the LIBS. After one circuit with the meter still running -"what number did you say it was..?", he had an excuse to look miserable when I refused to tip him!

"a tip of 5p was given"

Isn't that the going rate for a Scotsman at any time?
