How about some manners Mr Moderator.

I can't understand why folk complain when they are using the wrong tool to do a job.

Folk know to use a hammer (tool) to bang in a nail (job).

Folk know to use a screwdriver (tool) to extract a screw (job).

Why complain when their browser (tool) doesn't work with a site (job).

Change your tool or shut up.

The problem exists in
- chrome
- firefox
-internet explorer

All of the above on PC (not an issue due to large screen size), android 10" tablet (samsung - a rather popular make), android 7" tablet (again samsung), android phone (large screen), android phone (small screen).

It also exists on the native browser for the android devices.

So what the feck you are going on about is just beyond me. Maybe you are some uber tech into weird OS's or Ubuntu, or you believe everyone should use your pet browser, but the fact of the matter is that in all the most common browsers and hardware and OS's (including apple, but I don't use them personally) the new layout makes it hard to use the forum.

Amd the owners of the forum are arrogantly oblivious to this and, rather than say "we will fix it", close threads discussing it, tell us we are wrong, tell us tough luck it is staying.

Now be a good chap (or chapess) and go do one - your input to the debate has hardly been earth shattering.

Can someone clarify which part people are unhappy about. I'm on ipad now and in portrait there are some links to news features on the right. Everything else remains the same.

Is that all we're debating here?

On screens lower res than your ipad the loss of a third of the screen is a significant user interface / useability issue.

Many have pointed it out.

Rather than the mods saying "we'll sort it", we have been told to either use the feature restricted mobile theme, or get over it. And as ever the bish and co have waded in, telling people that they.must be mistaken.

Yet again the arrogance of the forum owners is staggering, and for many that has now be one the issue.

The new admin team and the yts coding apprentice (it must be, 'cos no self respecting experienced designer / coder would do something without checking mobiles amd tablets) seem determined to have their way, and to hell with user experience.

I've done that Stylish thing and it has worked on my Windows laptop with Chrome. I've not used my Android tablet yet to view the forum but would I be right to assume that Stylish won't work with Android Chrome because I don't think Android Chrome will run extensions?

No idea, DaveRo is your man.

Because a few find things inconvenient is no legitimate reason to expect the "world" to change.
It's not as if almost every person viewing this sight is complaining.
The arrogance is a few expecting things to change to suit them.
The post ref. "tool" and "job" could be extended to include the device (tablets etc) as not being suitable for their use in this instance.
With only a few complaining it seems the majority are OK with the site as it is.

It would appear that Time Inc are trying to destroy their readership of these fora, the way they keep messing up the site, and the response of the mods to comment, indicates to me that nobody cares about these fora anymore. Thank goodness there is an alternative now.
I'm not sure the Moderator(s) have any say or responsibility about how the forum is presented. Why would he/they? Nor, it would appear, does the Forum Administrator (FAT) which just seems bizarre...

Arrogance is hardly an apt description of those asking the format be put back to the way it was. And as for telling us using IPads that we have the wrong tool for the job is somewhat ironic when the Time mags support and promote iPad versions of their magazines.

Thanks. That's put us right. Glad to hear you're not having problems. Neither am I, on the wide screen monitor I am using today.

You need to remember that in all situations only a very small proportion of disgruntled people will actually verbalise it. The majority grump in science.

This lot running the forum now are as others have said, arrogant as can be seen by some of their replies, totally unprofessional. I do find myself visiting this place less and less.

Shame.
