was at a do the other night and was speaking to a few members of denbighshire county council, one of them had the big chain on and i presume he was the chair of DCC,
i am aware , as i assume others are, that the welsh assembly is throwing money at putting marinas into wales, objective one money is still around but is soon to be stopped.
how many of has been down the new motorways in west france, portugal and spain and seen the signs, objective one money supplied by the eec has done this.
now we have had objective one money for quite a few years here in north wales and have not seen any projects on the motor wayscale.
i said to these DCC people how about converting rhyl harbour into a marina? the coast from holyhead to liverpool is devoid of any safe refuges so why not, use objective one money to do it.
ohh
umh
well
what does the forum think?
should we be pushing our representatives to use eec funds before they run out to put in new facilitied for us all to use?

no where to sail to from rhyl

Am from Hoylake, always had boats there, that is a run in if you know the area.

From Rhyl it is Conwy or Liverpool really, on a really bleak and very tidal coastline.

To be a marina people would have to want to put boats there, otherwise it is already a place to run to isn't it if you can pick up a river mooring.

Interesting thought though

Porthmadog keeps threatening to build a marina, but I think it would ruin the village.

Why ????

It's a nothing place. Why not go a few miles east and resurrect another nothing undredgable place: Mostyn.

Now then Sonsy-Lass, let's be thinking of the next marina after Gallows Point ... It's the only available site left within 56 miles of Rhyl and is capable of taking 1,600 boats. Where is it ??? Ha Ha Ha - Nobody has thought of it yet ... and I'm not saying.

Forget it. As soon as you are serious about doing anything in England it will be found to be the home of the lesser spotted lugworm and the NIMBY's will stop it. On the South Coast I have visited Langstone Harbour once and if ever there was a place for waterfront development and marinas instead of virgin mud flats ( and the lesser spotted lugworm) its there. What happenned - nothing. From an aircraft England is still a green country but we pay farmers a subsidy to keep it that way. England is so lucky that it does not need anything, no development, or roads, airports, housing let alone marinas. I look forward to sailing around the coast visiting various places, leaving the boat secure in a marina when going to eat nice meals. Sounds familar yes you must be in France! Why can't we learn how other nations manage it or do we still think that by being British/UK we know best?

Re: come on niggely :))

For your info my uncle lives in Cynwyd ...

It's a logical place. But it needs a bit of lateral thinking to realise it's potential.

Stu, you've passed it by and seen it many times ... It's there. It's there. It's there all waiting to be realised.

Cheers

Nige

PS: I'll email you.

What about the 50% (?) of forumites who think marinas are a retrograde step and are the worst thing that's happened to boating in the UK. Have increased the cost of boating, spoiled boating for those that like swinging moorings, anchoring without cost in unspoiled estuarys and creeks etc

I don't think there will be a consensus on this one

Welsh assembly seems to have changed its tune, then. Gallows Point had to fight them all the way and have suffered a two-year delay entirely attributable to Assembly procrastination. I guess Rhyl has few of the AONB problems that Gallows Point did, but one might expect the Assembly to have taken a more neutral view, or even a positive one in view of the potential for jobs.

Nigel,

I don't think a marina at Cynwyd will do very well! Nice little place though and the Blue Lion used to sell the best beer I ever tasted. Always called in there on our way back from Bala or the coast.

marinas darn sarf are, but up here, with them some being part funded by eec money, they are not tooo expensive and the more we can get the more competition there is the cheaper they will become. i would rather see a marina at rhyl instead of a run down river exit, it would help to rejuvinate the area, and most important it is in an objective one area where mega grants are available.

Re: if thats what it takes

Take your county council friends on a trip to see how the French channel ports do it. I think it's mainly local money rather than EU funds that finance them. In the UK itb always seems that marinas = private money =huge mooring fees = massive housing developments= local dissent. Yet another thing that the French seem to have 'got right'

Sorry guys...didn't the french learn about marina's from the dutch? cos dutch marinas are half the price of the french, and most of the dutch are owned & operated by the local councils.
