I have a Yanmar engine which has a seperate hours run meter fitted. Trouble is - it doesn't work. I've tested the meter which appears to work when power is applied. The fault must be in the wiring. Where should it be connected to?

Some meters are wired into the ignition, some to the alternator, older ones were linked to an optical device on the fly wheel, once came across one that worked through vibration.. I am sure there are other ways as well.

What variety is yours ?

Or is this the question that you are asking ?

Well, if it works when power is applied, add it to the ignition circuit -ie one wire to negative, and the other to the ignition light or switch. Get the polarity right, or it may run backwards!
