A bit of interest for some, planning application at Mercury for a Hotel complex. MDL own the land... . Hotel would basically flatten all the boat sheds and make a lot of businesses homeless and probably take out the old slipway...(Steve D & others will have to find another slip to use..)

Apparently Eastleigh Council have decided there must be a Hotel on the Hamble, they have put in planning applications on a few sites, quite a few folk getting quite upset about it, but very early stages...

..anyone else know out about it?

actually, just found MDL had also put in planning for Hamble Point, also for a Hotel...but turned down immediately

I think both of those applications have been rejected or withdrawn more than once, AFAIK neither of them are a live matter right now.

Certainly the Mercury one could bring benefit to the river and the wildlife as part of the plan was to re-instate an area known as the promonotory at the north end back to nature subject to relocating the people/groups currently there.

The one at Mercury is live right now, unless from Saturday to now things have changed. There is a protest group now formed and as I said, a few local peeps getting very upset by it...

I'm with you, those old sheds etc have kind of had there day, the Hotel would be quite small apparently... not sure what that means in today's standards but the guys in the office have reassured that it is at the very early stages of something that may never happen

I seem to remember that when the home builder that ownes the airfield last applied for planning the previso was they would build hotel and leisure center to calm the local residents but that never got through.

I cant help but feel the gravel pits will come at some point and it will be the thin end of the wedge for Hamble. on the face of it, a hotel in Hamble would be good for the area, think of all those extra DFT'ers that could be accomidated and all the extra trade the local businesses would get.....

Afraid i have voted with my feet and it will no longer be our home after this weekend...

Shades of Howards' Way with that, for those of us that are old enough to remember that particular plot....

The sheds are all ancient and not a good environment in which to make or service any products. A small hotel would probably employ more people anyway. Some of the liveaboard barges are extremely scruffy, the word junkyard comes to mind....
The principal problem with any development there is the poor road access down to Hamble.

agree..

agree....

as you say FF, that wont do me any favours, as a truck driver of umpteen years, the access road is a major question mark and the haulage cost of "turnaround, waiting time" with more than 2 trucks at a time would be more than the "hotel" itself !!!!! also there are a large number of water utility pipes that might make earthmovers in/out a "laugh"!!!!..to sum up, as a know nothing idiot, is it worth the bother ??

I use the slip like Steve and if it goes I will miss it.

But I have to agree with the others, the sheds and the area are not far from starting to look a mess, a hotel would be great. We like to have people down to the boat but there are very few places for them to stay on the Hamble.

If its done well, the location and wildlife taken into account, I think it would be a positive addition to the area.

The lack of a hotel anywhere nearby always made the big ybw Mercury meets I organised in the past more of a challenge. There are some B&B's in staggering distance, but not that many

Steve, I agree, I very much doubt anything will ever be done....glade too as I'd miss those horrible old sheds!..... back in the day..... my Dad's old 9 tonne Hillyard used to be dragged up the slip and stored in the shed every winter....a bit worrying I can remember that!.... even the rigging coming off every year and put in a great vat of boiled oil....still remember the smell. Oh god I feel old.....
