Looks like the SBS lads sorted them rather quicker than the cops + army found the drone pests at Gatwick. Why are we cursed with idiots that get up with these daft ventures instead of just getting on with their lives in a way that doesn't annoy everyone?

I couldn't understand why piracy was discounted. They threatened the crew and tried to bully the master into following a different course from that planned.

Oh, several could be discounted:
1. They need some witnesses. The entire crew are not British and they may not want to have to appear as witnesses.
2. The media reports may be exaggerated! The bullying (e.g. different course may well have been pleading and the master refusing just because he knows they wouldn't survive)
3. The master and crew will know what life is like in Lagos, they may well have sympathy and just want to avoid the costs of the illeagles (sic) penalties.
4. Taking statements would delay the ship even more and the company may be putting the master under pressure.
3. If they are prosecuted we would have to pay for the expensive trial - both the prosecution and defence.
4. If convicted, we will have to pay for their hotel, sorry prison sentence.
5. If they get substantial sentences by the time they get released, the chances of them then being deported would be zero (human rights etc, etc).
6. Frankly Essex Police have enough to do without wasting time on that. Remember the Police Service is now in its 4th Era
Era 1 (an early 19th century) a patrolling preventative force intended to stop crime NOT investigate reactively (legislation in those days were just for arresting those FOUND committing). Enough police officers to call for assistance from a neighbouring officer who used a whistle [or lanthern at night time])
Era 2 (later 19th century) a patrolling preventative force and reactive investigation 'service' (creation of the detective force, development of forensic (Fingerprints in 1903 etc etc.)
Era 3 (second half 20th century) a patrolling preventative force (dwindling), reactive investigation 'service' (swamped) and intelligence-led high volume crime, crimes that are organised and Organised Crime (that's different stuff).
Era 4 (post May as the Home Secretary) a priority only service!

Violence by stowaways is commonplace. The practised stowaway disposes of all forms of ID and invents his own language so he (it’s always “he”) cannot be repatriated.
The crew won’t be getting their bonuses this year having failed to do their stowaway search properly before sailing.

Correct. S.O.P. for the P&I Club which gets stuck with the bill (taxpayers don’t pay for stowaways; the shipowning company does which means their P&I Club do). The Club (in this case the North of England club) prosecute to stop the clock.
The bastards picked a respectable shipowning company. Some owners a a bit East of Italy make them walk the plank.

Typically the person claims to be from a red-list country - Somalia is very common - because we can't repatriate people to countries that are deemed systemically unsafe. They are well versed in our immigration laws and how to sidestep them :-(
