Hose for water filler.

Our drinking water filler hoses are polythene (I think ) and clear. Where light can get at them in the cabin (Where they can be seen) there is some mold growing inside. I intended to replace them with opaque hoses but the local (Canal) chandler only has white hose which says it is intended for sanitation, I have no idea what it is made of, could I use it? Water is in contact with it for a while when the bags are full (days/weeks).

The galley pipe is in view in the cabin. The only food grade pipe we could find was a yellow reinforced one.

What do people use?

Go and have a look at your local Koi/Gold fish pond supplier they will have hose at the right price and size.

What do people use?

Normal is to use the blue 13mm food grade hose - red is available for hot. Should be available in any chandlers.

It the filler hose from the deck fitting I am replacing. 1.5" or c.c.. 37mm internal diameter.

Sorry, should have more carefully. Vetus catalogue no DWHOSE38A or Force 4 830147 is what you want. It is nothing out of the ordinary and any decent chandlers should stock it.

That is clear like the hose that is fitted - the OP wants to install something opaque to reduce the risk of mold growth

The Vetus is not as clear as the plain. but fail to see that mould is a problem in filler hose which is empty.

I am confused by the original question as it talks about hose to the galley which is why I suggested blue 13mm as that is the correct hose for internal plumbing as it is food grade and opaque. Never had any problem with clear hose from filler to tank.

It's not something that I have worried about, but there was certainly some brown discolouration on the inside of the filler hose down to the forward water tank on our five year old boat. I always add purification tablets to the tank when I refill, so I don't anticipate the growth building up in the tank proper.

It is something I was worried about. I had two severe episodes of stomach pains, vomiting and diaroeua last year, off work for a week each time. Both on the boat on identical outings even down to where we went, ate and walked the dog.

A further episode in March, not associated with the boat, had me in hospital for 10 or 12 days and exiting minus my gall bladder with a further 3 weeks or thereabouts off work. So, maybe not, some sort of poisoning, but gall stones. It has however made me a bit more aware of food hygene

A long time ago I worker for ICI in the North East, caustic soda liquor was used by a lot of breweries to clean pipework; I still do the same today. Thankfully is available in smaller quantities than the 38 tonne road tanker we dispatched.
