I need to install my water heater by connecting a piece of 3/4 inch (id) hose to 1 inch (id) hose. Anybody have any ideas how to do it or where I can get the necessary plumbing part. I've seen connecters on the internet, but they only connect hoses of the same diameter. Any advice gratefully received.

Buy a 28 x 22mm reducing fitting from a plumbers merchant,

e.g. : http://www.plumbworld.co.uk/253-1641

or buy the solder ring option.

Solder in a 2" stub of 22mm and another of 28mm copper pipe ( get from your local friendly plumber)
These diameters are internal so you will need to put the hoses in very hot water for a time to soften them and with a small amount of difficulty force them on to the spigots.
Hint: put the fitting in the water as well....then it will not act as a heat sink and cool the hose down.
Don't forget the Jubilee clips !
