Hose Clips (Jubilee type)

Spent 3 hours this morning trying to get access to the screws on two jubilee clips on exhaust hose situated directly below the engine. Wondered whether anybody knew of similar clips but with screw head in-line with hose rather than at 90 degrees.

Hi

Most jubilee clips I've seen have a hexagonal head as well as a screwdriver slot, about 7 or 8mm. Often easier to get a spanner on to them even when access and vision is restricted.

I can see it now, there will be replies to this post saying you could over tighten them, but just use a bit of common sense when re-tightening.

Yes but they are not good enough for your job. I suggest when refitting the standard stainless steel jubilee clips you orientate them so you can get a small socket and rachet onto the screw (most are hex headed)

I must agree. The best tool I ever bought, costs less than a fiver and one of the most used tools in my boat toolkit.

Had one for years. Just make sure you standardise all your clips so the take the same size, which I think is 8mm.

hoses and fitings are big business, but cheap, and there is bound to be an outfit that makes up stuf for lorries near you with better/diferent designs.

Remember, even though you probably need industrial pullers to remove the pipe from the engine or through hull, to fit at least 8 jubilee clips to each fitting in case of failure.

I have yet in my life to see one fail, but the mags and so the great unwashed are now brainwashed to believe they always fail.... Seize up maybe, but never fail...

Lovely tool, but pretty pricey for just one size of socket. Any 1/4" drive socket set will have a small ratchet handle and/or a nut spinner handle which, when fitted with a 7mm socket will do the same job.

I have a set of 'small' sockets, screwdrivers bits etc that has one of these flexible drivers with a squared end to fit it's range of sockets including the 8mm for Jubilee clips.

Well, if you use the stainless marine ones then no need to fight with screwdrivers as the screw hex has a perfect hex head which fits small socket socket spanners.

I discovered this when dealing with the hoses onto the manifold which of course were fitted with the heads underneath and out of reach by screwdriver but relatively easy with a 1/4 drive socket wrench.

I think you are missing the point re the lovely tool, the shaft is flexible, so it can access the nut part from an angle whithout the problems of a normal socket and solid extension bar.

Agree capsco. I would have thought everybody would have a socket set as part of their boat tool kit but even with universal joints it can be difficult to undue seized-up jubilee clips. The proper "Jubilee" named flexible tool is invaluble and it is not worth getting the cheapskate imitations.
