Horta/Azores What a disappointment

Status of the marina-what on earth is that!

Don't think you'll find any of the great 'gateways' brimming with 5*American style services. The late Panama Canal Yacht Club was a fabulous decrepit spot that catered to the long distance cruiser admirably. Cheap docking, cheap meals, great bar and a collection of characters passing through who could yarn for hours and hours

Dunno but I like my cruising with character not sparkling bathrooms....

Shelter Bay Marina which has replaced the Panama Yacht Club does have decent facilities and the meals and beer are still cheap although the mooring is quite expensive but not as bad as the Flamenco Marina on the Pacific side. The same crowd seem to gather at Shelter Bay as used to at the Panama Yacht Club. The food at Shelter Bay is certainly much much better than Peter's Cafe Sport in Horta.

Yes I know Shelter Bay well, spent five months there when it first opened.....I expect it's better now under the management of John ex Club Nautico Cartagena. I think you'll find that a lot of cruisers now frequent the yacht club round the back of Colon near the big boatdock-can't remember the name at the moment.Glad to hear that the food has improved it was appalling and extremely expensive when we were there.
Still really sad that Panama Yacht Club bit the dust though, the place had such great character.........
