Horseshoe or lifebuoy ring

Hello
My dad has a small fishing boat hopefully after some long restoration he will be taking it out on it maiden voyage

For “ in case of man over board “

He is struggling to work out what to buy a horseshoe type life buoy or the life buoy ring

He will been fishing at sea about a couple of miles out only

Can anyone recommend what type to buy

Does he habitually wear a life jacket on board and do other people when they go with him? If so carrying one is mostly of use for rescuing 3rd parties. Traditional SOLAS rings are huge, cumbersome and look a bit silly on most vessels under 40'. A horseshoe or one of the modern recovery/rescue devices like those MartynG has shown are lighter and look less incongruous on a small boat.

A horseshoe type ring isn't tethered to the boat and therefore can be deployed much quicker. It can also, aswell as a floatation device, serve as a marker to help locate the Man Over Board (MOB). The Seago type one is tethered to the boat so when the MOB grabs it and puts it on he's secured from drifting away.

Just re-read the OP.
Horseshoe or Ring?
Horseshoe, the MOB swims into the gap then secures with clip on the cord.
A Ring will be more difficult to put on, especially in a stressed situation.
Horseshoe for me!

I bought the Plastimo inflatable type horse shoe which is much more compact an ideal for smaller boats, however the price is now a bit steep, got mine for £74.

Much more sensible and easy for everyone to wear a proper lifejacket.
If someone is in the water and possibly in distress it is well nigh impossible to make proper use of a horseshoe or ring, whereas a proper lifejacket does it all for you.
Throwing a ring or horseshoe to someone is liable to cause an injury them.

A bit off topic - and this may be a false rumor - but I've been told that men sailing singlehanded often fall overboard when they are peeing over the side . Maybe some type of harness for those situations?

That's fine but you still to consider the possibility that the casualty in the water may not originate from your boat so might not be wearing a life jacket .

Just make sure you wear an Automatic Lifejacket - you don't have to think(where is the damn pull cord?) as it all happens automatically and you float! Tested a couple of years ago. All my lifejackets are now Automatic.
