Last night a very strong gale ( F 9 - 10) passed over Adriatic sea from Rijeka to Dubrovnik. As it is full season and no places for all in marinas and safe ports, a lot of boats spent night in not completely protected coves.
Croatian coast guard received 22 calls for help and intervention. Few of them were Mayday calls.
Unfortunatelly 2 sailors missed in waves near Island Vis ( after MOB skipper jump in water to help and leave wife and 13 years daughter on board) . Both two men were not able to swimm back to boat. They forget that boat is sailling in gale without sails and motor with velocity 2 to 3 kts.Completely Coast guard and military helicopters are in emergency . This morning they found skipper near Island Hvar in bad condition but alive.Other gentlemen is still missing and salvaging is continue.
This is learning story to all charter guests without practice who came and think that vacation have to be like on the Moorings photos.

WoW, can see how that would have happened, but to leave wife and child on board!!!
Glad he is alive and not 2 peaple dead that could so easily have happened.
Its one of those situation I hope I will never be in.

By chance, do you know from which direction the wind was blowing that strong, and for how long?
That's quite rare in August, as far as I know.

It was W gale wind ( in front of the gale) and durate only half an hour. Every gale in Adriatic come from west and in this period durate an hour. Problem is first wind hit, which can be 40 to 50 kts. Every summer after 15. Aug we have one or two summer gales but not so strong as it was. Coast guard give warnings every half an hour before with wind forecast 40 kts, but people does not prepare their boats for gale good enough.
Last news: 1 person died near Korcula, one is still missed,12 boats were damaged.

We had a severe squall in the gulf of Trieste on Saturday afternoon. Part of the same system, clearly. Lovely morning, then wham for an hour, then a lovely late afternoon. During the squall, several maydays sent to the coastguards but no loss of life, thank goodness.
As Branko says, 95% of the time, cruising here is as per the piccies, but when the weather turns bad, it can do so very very quickly.

Generally YES, but localy blows different depending of the configuration of mountains. For example: In Kvarner ( Rijeka , Krk) Bura blows from two directions - from NNE( Bura od tramuntane) and NEE ( Bura od Senja). In Trogir Bura blows across Kastelanski zaljev and came to Trogir from E. ......
