I’m planning on a windlass replacement. I have a lofrans vertical at the moment but am planning to go over to a horizontal with quick release for anchoring when fishing etc.
my boat is 8.6m .
what are your reviews and thoughts on what’s out there ?
many thanks

Mines a vertical and I power it down normally. Changing from vertical to horizontal, will the new one cover the holes of the old one?
Well I don’t know yet seeing as I haven’t decided which one I will get. Hence the thread . Powering down is too slow to anchor a fishing mark in a fast tried . Three why I want to go to a horizontal for the quick release :

My Lofrans Tigres works well for me. Free fall by slackening clutch wing nut, but my boat is 35feet, so you would probably want a smaller model. (I can never understand people using power to drop an anchor, when gravity does it faster, better and for nothing).

Ok thank you, what model do you use ?
Having looked up the email correspondence from 2006 I'm reminded that it's a VW1500 in which the VW stands for Vertical Windlass and the 1500 is watts. Although it's a VW it's merely mounted horizontally under the chain locker lid through the side of a longitudinal bulkhead.

At the time they also did 500w, 800w and 1200w. I ordered 1200w but they were in the process of upgrading that model to 1500w so that's what I ended up with. 10mm chain. I installed it when I bought the boat, replacing what I assume was the original windlass, also a Maxwell, which had no chain gypsy, only a rope drum. The anchor rode was lead-weighted braidline and I wanted chain with nylon octoplait.

Mine doesn't have a clutch that is easy to activate. If I do really want freefall I take the chain of the gypsy and hand it out. Big problem that I have though, is that the anchor and 20m of 8mm chain is at the very limit of my ability to hold, so any 'drag' causes problems. Changing to 6mm chain is not a viable option before any one mentions it !

I've rigged mine so I can raise and lower it remotely from the helm while having control of throttle, gearbox and wheel plus sight of plotter position, depth, COG/SOG and TV views of the stemhead and chain locker using cameras linked to the plotter video screens. Saves all that hollering, gesticulating and fingers lost in the windlass. 5 & 10 metre marks are painted on the chain and visible on the cameras and together with the sounding that tells me when the anchor has bottomed and it's time to go astern rather than dump more chain on top of it.

For the fun of it I rigged one of the cameras in a waterproof housing to go down with the anchor and watch it dig in, real time, then break out again and come up. Fascinating stuff but I wouldn't recommend it with all that cctv wire and string in the water. Just wanted to see if it could be done.

ditto. Helm control is invaluable for a tight anchorage. Mine is a Lofrans vertical. I can dump chain but the speed and momentum it generates doing so gives me the wobbles. I worry any kink or snag in the chain once it reaches full momentum is liable to do some serious damage if it snatches on something
