Just watched Horizon. Great - I'm really looking forward to my first sea passage now!!!!

Maybe I should just stick to the Thames but then again you never know where or when these 'Freak' waves will strike.

I have sailed the 7 seas since I was 8 years old, my first job at just turned 15 was in the 'Merch'. Yes! I have seen seas as shown in that documentary but No! I have never encountered freak waves as described... but have heard tell of them.

Both( Lighter Aboard Ship) Lash ships which used to call in at Sheerness along with two other American Lash ships,giving a weekly service.Their regular run included the far east the east coast of america Bremerhaven and then Sheerness.The ship was massive some 500 odd feet long and loaded with up to 180 floating boxes which could contain 200 tons of cargo each.We were due to meet the Munchen that December at 12 midnight with two tugs in attendance to assist in the unloading.
The ship simply did not arrive.After waiting for about 12 hours we were sent home.
They never ever found the ship.

Yes really good programme the linear theory which works out the likely maximum height of waves in certain wind conditions shows a pattern of waves in deep water creating effectively say, a 12m swell.

I think the main difference with these extra large waves seems to be that they reach a height where gravity takes over and they collapse or "brake" instead of remaining within the general swell. A bit like when we see cresting or braking waves in say shallower south east coast waters for instance. IMHO of course
I think most of us have seen this when rounding say North Foreland, with cresting waves in quick succession.

I've windsurfed in 9 metre waves and it was incredible. The sheer power and the incredible noise!!! Not for the faint hearted as it was off an unihabited island in the Canaries called Los Lobos.

Come up here to the northern north sea in the gales we've been having lately, you'll see some wonderful sea and waves! 15-18 meters last time and they are bulding quite nicely now! On some of the older platforms on ekofisk, which sank a bit!! the seas were breaking on the well head decks, nice! The seas get worse from now on, late january is the best time, I wouldn't want to be in any ship out in this lot!
 
In October of 2000, we were out offshore Denmark in fullscale Force 12. Whilst everyone was running for shelter, we were in the middle of a multi-zone acid campaign, so all we could do was pull off the rig & ride it out. Spectacular watching from the bridge in 11-12 metre seas 3-4 metre swell & hurricane winds. Like being in an express elevator from hell. Impossible to lie down & rest in cabins. Everything not tied down ends up on cabin floors. Remove mattress from bed & wedge oneself in a corner. Terrific rollercoaster ride. Previous October we were inside Esbjerg harbour with 5 metre waves inside the harbour. Ship loosed off mooring ropes and went on to D.P. in the harbour with warps still attached to the quay. 4 people killed in town. Classed as Force 5 hurricane. Flattened most of the trees in Denmark.

ps. We are sailing this morning for about a 5 day job off Denmark. About 10-11 hours to the rig. Maersk always insist that they can see these 'weather windows' where they are sure we can do some jobs. Does our company fight our corner? Do they hell. In the end they always push it back on to me and the captain. Safety.....Pah!

Thankfully the fiancee was not watching, otherwise it'll put her off going to sea for good - mind you, made me have second thoughts.

They never did explain if you could predict these "Freak Waves" - and to think they have been around since the beginning of time, it is only within the last 8 years they are doing something to try to understand them!

But theres freak waves all the time. It's quite normal to be cruising along at 20 knots, quite happily, then suddenly theres either a big hole in the sea for no reason at all. Then do a big belly flop into it. Else a sudden wall of water that you bash into and stop dead. There just bigger as the sea gets rougher.

Strange! Would have thought that Tony would have had something to add here as he too is ex-merch.
