according to the Times today a jet skier was fined £500 and ordered to pay £2000 costs by magistrates on the IOW.
He had five pints of lager and then broke a 6 knot speed limit on his PWC during cowes week.

Is this stong action in the right direction, the thin of the wedge, or a mere pretence at control during what is a high profile time?

views please.

Come on brain.get this over and i can go back to killing you with beer

Hmmm! Difficult one, might I suggest that had he not gone zooming through a Cowes Week congested harbour no one would have 'pulled' him ?

Oh and by the way...

... a powerful JS is capable of 70mph. In the hands of a drunkard, this is lethal to anyone swimming / rowing / dinghy sailing / yacht sailing / just hanging about.

You can liken this to some drunken lout doing 70mph down the 30mph road that you live in.

Anyone still got sympathy??

Re: Fair cop

Seemed fair cop/fair punishment imho. BTW, in the report I read, he did plead guilty, show remorse and apologise quite profusely to the court. So, justice done I think

Fine seems fair enough

I wonder how the 2 grand costs were worked out

Rather expensive, did they use a helicopter to catch him.

Re: hoorah FU***** good show

Should ban him from use of water as well.
Be nice to send this to the Environment agency to remind them of their duty to both the environment and other users re this plague of jet ski's

Cheers

If he broke the speed limit for the harbour, and he was under the influence of alcohol, then hoorah; two offences against harbour byelaws, which have been there for years and which are there for the protection of all of us!!

Hmm.While agreeing that being drunk in charge of any boat should be taken very seriously indeed,I tend to feel that we maybe are having a bit of a go at jet skiers. The amount of wash generated by a PWC tends not to spill my beer, while a large motor cruiser passing moored/anchored craft at an inappropiate speed does.

B.....y hell where did all that wash come from.
Er looks like a B....m to me.

I'll second that. The prat deserved to be fined for what he did, not because he's a Jet Skier. Sadly there are people hereabouts who think that Jet Skis constitute some kind of plague.

Yes I agree that not all jet ski folk are dangerous but from personal experience of local lot they are.
I was working on my gear box which is very big and heavy these pratts come past at over 40knots and every thing moves .It's not nice when there's half a tonne rocking from side to side .This was 6 miles inland .
It does seem that most have a strange urge to show off to any one in the locality regardless of the consequences re risk or damage .The local mob show both ignorance and aggression when challenged !!.
So in my opinion £2000 is well justified and hopefully set a precedent so others will get the same .

Wot me worry?

My observation is as a result of not only having a busy well regulated local club which draws people with both PWCs and and varied collection of basic sportsboats inc very latest 3 Black Max 25ft type monsters with matching Range Rover , just adjacent to my club, but also a very naughty unofficial site just acroos the river used by anyone who needs to gain access to the water with any thing that floats and can be towed by an old escort van..
This can result in possibly 50 odd machines whizzing around on a busy weekend. Most stay within the designated area and a few insist on going outside. Most of the time it is no more than a minor irritation and i suspect that if the folks were aware or able to get a bit of tuition or coaching they would be more than happy to take adavantage.
Many will be on the first rung of the ladder to that future purchase of a Sealine or two.
Frequently you can see some expensive Phantom towing something built in the early sixties powered(or not) by an ancient Evinrude and all done with out rancour.
Each of them enjoying the water in whatever way they can afford.
We all start somewhere and i would rather all of them had fun in the safe area around me than elsewhere causing annoyance to other.
