A friend of mine has a boat moored near Harleyford/Temple and is fiited with a Honda 40hp OB. The OB is less than 18 months old and now requires a 100 hour service.

In order to maintain the Honda warranty, he appreciates that is must be serviced by a Honda dealer but of the two he's contacted, D&R at Walton and Redline at Abingdon, both say thay don't come out to do servicing .

So what are his options? He doesn't have the time to motor down to Walton or up to Abingdon, so is there another Honda dealer out there that is prepared to carry out servicing on site?

If he doesn't get any joy, he'll be contacting Honda Marine UK (for what it's worth) to seek advice .

Honda servicing.
Chap who parks next to me bought two Honda outboards at the same time from GSM in Gravesend.
One of them needed sorting and basically GSM said sorry too busy to come to you....he searched around and found somebody else to sort engine.
Not very happy with Honda at all !

So that's two unhappy Honda customers so far, might as well add myself to the list .

As my boat is trailed, the first service on my Honda 20 was carried out a couple of weeks ago but it meant me driving to Abingdon with the boat on the trailer. Hardly convenient .

Bearing in mind that Redline wouldn't come out to me either, I asked Redline a few weeks before the engine as due a service if they could do it on a Saturday if I came to them and waited whilst the service was done. They asked me to ring them on the day before the Saturday we'd proposed which we duly did, just to confirm that they'd have someone in on the Saturday.

Turned up on the Saturday and their first comment was "we thought you were coming by river?":confused: I'd told them I was based in Marlow several times and the boat was on a trailer :(.

Many places, if you can do it, want you drop off on a Saturday and pick up the next Saturday - so that's two trips to the dealer each way .

Is this just Honda dealers then or does it apply to other OB manufacturers?

There's a dealer locator on the Honda website but it comes up with no one else in the area .

Sorry if I've missed something but why does it have to be serviced by a Honda dealer to maintain the warranty. It doesn't apply to cars anymore so why should it apply to outboards?

A very valid point Wavey and one which cropped up in http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?t=320628.

The UK owners and service manuals supplied with the engine make it quite clear that only Honda approved dealers should carry out servicing work to maintain any warranty, in the case of Honda it's 6 years. However........

We've just been on the Honda Marine UK "live chat" and have been told what we always thought should be the case - "anyone can service the Honda engines but, to maintain any warranty, should be VAT registered, use Honda OEM parts, adhere strictly to the service frequency & service tasks and finally, be able to certify the service by a "dealer" stamp in the service book".

So that's a result. Looks like Ross will be doing our 100 hour service next time round ;).

Same as for cars then. Thought it couldn't be otherwise without contravening EU legislation.

Servicing is money for old rope. Outboard servicing is so easy (impeller change a little more involved). When out of warranty do it yourself:)

Pain in the transom

Don't think so, you can turnover over £70k now before needing to register.

Can't see why being VAT registered is so important and doubt if its a legally supportable requirement.

Something to be avoided at all costs unless you desperately wanted to spent several hours each and every week/month /year collecting tax money free of charge and then have to put up with customers moaning about how expensive you are on account of being 20% dearer than that bloke down the road who curiously only accepts cash. :(
