My outboard came with the boat from Germany. Its a Honda 4.5. Anyone know if manuals are available on-line?

I have seen ebay ads for CDs with the entire Honda outboard workshop manual range on them..anyone seen these at all..are they any good or just pirate copies?

Honda UK suggested I contact a dealer..I did, and they promised a pdf. by email, which never came, and then they went out of business. I havn't tried again as there is no rush as I havn't used the outboard yet. Not allowed on Rutland Water.

What makes you think it's a 4.5 hp
Could it be that it's been described as a Honda 4 (stroke) 5 (HP)
Or is the model number BF45, which is a 45HP 3 cylinder. (quite a big motor)

The only Honda engine I can see referred to as a 4.5 is a garden machinery motor.

The outboards have always been 5HP (Model BF5)

Could it have been a tax-break model in Germany. Really a 5HP, but rated at 4.5 to avoid tax or duty or some terrible certification requirement?

I wondered if its a Germany only model. The clue is the 4.5 badging on both sides in green.. I'l have to take a photo of it and post it then someone might recognise it. Later after work.

Honda have never made 2 stroke anything so I doubt they feel the need to put a 4 on it for 4 stroke though

I bought a c.d. for a tenner or so; every engine is included, it says. You have to back date your computer's clock and date, use the software, then remember to reset the current time settings. The cd served its purpose in persuading me the job in question was too much for me and I used a workshop. If you want the cd pm me yr deatils and put a couple of squids into the charity box and I mail it to u but it'll take a week or so from Spain.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm a bit embarassed to say I have now found the manual in pdf on the Honda website. I had looked before, but obviously not hard enough...oops.

Yes its a BF4.5 which is the same in essence as a BF5..now to figure out if it has a charging system (too much to expect I fear).

Thanks again

Thanks Lakesailor. I did PM you but your inbox is full according to the machinery.

Incidentally it tells me the 4.5 is the "bodensee" engine which complied with the particular emissions requirements for that water. You live and learn.

The paperwork says its has a generator. I havn't looked on the engine yet as its in my shed..and its dark and its down the garden and I'm frightened /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
