got a 2006 model outboard that will only run with the choke out, not a clue what the fault is, I have the carb off and am looking at it. it the bottom is a brass set screw that I have half turned over in attempt to clean the reservior, the bolt holding the res. on is as rusty as possible. It now soaks in WD40.
The air filter unit seeems ok and the fuel pipe is not blocked as i have blown through it.
Thanks

Get yourself some decent carb cleaner - your jets are gummed up probably. Clean jets with a single bristle plucked from a mediium or fine toothbrush.

Always run the Honda dry after use, then it wont gum up. They are very prone to this issue.

This is good advice, all the lean burn Honda carb versions are prone to this problem, mechanics make big bucks cleaning out Honda carb jets. I run a 25 three pot, exellent engine, but leave it a couple of months and unless the bowls are empty it can gum up. Fuel set helps and is reccomended. I run mine dry whilst approaching my mooring and have had no props since I had to strip all three carbs down and clean out the main jets! I am very carefull now.

Mine is an original 1998 BF2 ... still running .... BUT totally marinised. (No parts replaced. Hammerite and Jenolite to the fore /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif )

Check your inline fuel filter - It really is inline. Take it out. Rub it between your fingers. Force backflow air thru it. Dose it with carb cleaner. Do this as necessary (my Honda BF2 needs it done twice a year)

Funny enough had the Tohatsu and lost it on a short trip towing the Dinghy, from east head to itchenor.

Funny how Davy_S knew what I said at the time.

Nip into halfords and get some redex or similar. Drain the tank and put in fresh petrol with a massive dose of redex, run in a dustbin for a couple of hours and the problem should go away. Then follow all the advice above. I run mine every couple of weeks at home....it's a b**tard.

If it only runs with the choke out then the main jet is blocked. Mine was blocked when I started it for the first time at the weekend. Took me all of 5 minutes to fix it. If the carb cleaner doesn't clear it you'll have to do the same. The only specialist tool you need is a 0.5mm pricker. The jet is plastic so use the correct sized wire!

Undo the two bolts on the inlet manifold. The carb will then come free. Try to preserve the gasket. Though replacements are available from Kelloggs. (There's a rubber rebreather(?) pipe on the inlet manifold that pulls away.)

Undo the screw holding the throttle cable against the casing. Unhook the throttle and choke cables from the carb and pop off the fuel pipe.

Grab a pair of small pliers and phillips screwdriver and retire to kitchen table.
Undo the 4 screws from the top of the carb.
Inside you'll see a round plastic plug with 2 flattened sides. Grab this firmly with pliers and pull out. It's only held in with an o' ring. The jet is the vertical hole in the end of this. Unblock and reassemble.

PS: I've now fitted a fuel filter to mine. Briggs and Stratton one - £2 from a garden shop.
PPS: There's a diagram of the carb on the honda web site - somewhere.
PPPS: When re-fixing the throttle cable screw make sure the throttle closes completely when the control is at idle. Otherwise the clutch won't disengage with embarrassing consequences!

As I said before - dont use wire. Use a bristle plucked from a tootbrush - the materials are approx the same so the damage potential is much reduced.
