Honda BF6B Outboard Motor

First thing is to check that the telltale is not blocked.

The water pump is located on the top of the gearcase so that has to be dropped.

Have not found a diagram of a BF6 so dont know what might be involved. The shift rod may have to be disconnected somewhere. ( at the top ???)

Hi
I recently had a similar problem with a Honda 6.
Before you pull anything else to bits make sure that its not the thermostat that has corroded shut.
This was the case with mine and was, of course, the last thing I looked at.

If you need to drop the bottom of the leg off to get to the impellor then I found that the only way to disengage the gear linkage was to do it from the top ( though someone on the forum might know better )
If you take off the top and look at the front of the engine while wiggling the gear lever then its quite obvious which bit is the selector rod.
This is held on with a split pin which is a pain to get to but once its off and the bolts are removed on the bottom of the leg then its easy to drop the bottom off and get to the impellor casing.
If you need any more detail let me know by PM and I will send you my phone number and happy to talk you through it.
As I say there may be an easier ( less fiddly ) way of getting the gear selector off but this is how I did it.
Anyway, hopefully its just the thermostat....much easier.

Nick

Thanks VicS, I poked through the telltale hole but still no peeing. I think the latest guise may be a BF8A, the Honda book says it covers both models but only says "ensure water comes from the telltale'. It has no guidance for when there is no water.

Thanks Melandnick, I hope too it's the thermostat, but it's not overheating. I think I understand about the gearchange linkage but I will pm if I have problems. Can you tell be where the thermostat is located?

Thanks T.

I think the latest guise may be a BF8A,
In which case you will find diagrams of the BF8 engines at http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Honda/Outboard Engine/parts.html
It appears that the shift rod does have to be disconnected at the top. No intermediate joint is shown. (If you unscrew any connectors mark them first so that you get them back correctly adjusted)

Not sure about the dodgy thermostat theory. If the teltale is just a telltale it should pee regardless of whether the thermostat is open or not. Does it normally pee as soon as you start it or only when warmed up and the thermostat has opened?

Thanks for the links guys.
It stopped peeing early in this season and hasn't passed a drop since.

If you have been using it without it overheating then the water pump must be Ok. look again at the telltale including the connection at the engine end.

Rough guide on over heating would be that if you cannot touch the engine block and cylinder head and maintain contact for a count of three then it is probably overheating. If splash of water sizzles and boils then it is seriously overheating. Similarly if the paint shows signs of burning or if there is steam coming from the exhaust pressure relief ports
