HONDA BF5 OUTBOARD / RECOIL STARTER PROBLEM

Just bought boat with Honda BF5 (Kingfisher 20, in well), and previous owner has just replaced the large starter cog, the one that actually engages flywheel. This is the second replacement, and he advised that it is better to start engine with rope directly onto top of flywheel. Starts well, but have been investigating the problem with recoil mech. The cog in question, engages ok but doesn't seem to get out of the way of the flywheel quick enough as engine picks up - only fractional but enough to be heard complaining. This cog then remains perilously close to the flywheel as engine is running. It seems only a matter of time for this cog to be damaged again, so I've reverted to the rope onto top of flywheel method of starting. Bit of a problem if speedy starting required ! I feel that there may be a spring or other component missing on the recoil mech which would instantly return this cog to a safe running position. Has anyone had this problem, and would be grateful for any info on blow-up/schematic diagrams for the BF5.

There's a Clymer manual for Honda outboards which, if it's not worth buying (understandable) could at least be consulted in the public library.

I don't know the particular engine, but on every recoil I've ever encountered (quite a few!), the retraction of the pawls is achieved by a slight overwind of the recoil spring. This can be a bit tricky if you're not used to it. Basically invloves shortening the pull-cord a little after finishing installation, which may mean you need to replace the cord (at least that's the way I do it).

I'm sure there are numerous experts on the forum, but they must all be sailing tonight!.

I've got a workshop manual for a Honda BF8/BF75/BF100 and I think it's probably a similar recoil starter. There should be a return spring for the pawls.
If you PM me with either a FAX number or an EMail address I'll send you a copy of the relevant pages from the manual which show an exploded view.
