Techn ical help please? The outboard starts and runs well and has been in recent regular use. Yesterday, throttling back, the revs took an age to drop. A few minutes later, the engine seem stuck at a fairly high power setting and the twist grip felt a little less positive than normal - a bit 'spongy' maybe. I'm no mechanic, but what should I be looking for before parting with money and handing it to a professional. Is it likey to be a DIY fix? Many thanks in anticipation.

Likely to be nothing more than friction in the throttle mechanism. Try lubricating the twist grip / cable / carb linkage. Doesnt require anything more than a bit of thought and common sense.

The carb has a twist butterfly flap - the spindle that this turns on can get sticky with old petrol residue .. pop the carb off and clean up as much as possible - we used a bit of WD40 to penetrate the bearings for the spindle without having to take it right off.

I used to have one of these POS engines. A regular problem was the throttle cable getting snagged and then stretched on the mounting "wing nuts"

This prevented the throttle from shutting down to idle. Try and remove the internal plastic cowling to get at the throttle adjuster and the over tightened bolts chewed up their seats and would not undo.

Managed to flog the wretched thing to an unsuspecting Frenchman in part exchange for a Yamaha 4hp 2 stroke.

Spot on! Having had a look tonight, the problem was obvious immediately. The throttle lever arm on the carb had stiffened up completely. A quick squirt of WD40, a clean and re-grease and we're done. For once, a 10 minute job that didn't take hours!

Thanks to all for your responses.
