Honda BF2 oil pouring from breather

Hi folks. Wonder if anyone can help before I condemn my outboard to the metal recycling skip.

I have a Honda BF2 , yes I know they’re probably the worst small outboards ever made, all my other engines are Yamaha and they’re way, way , way better. I didn’t buy it , it came with a previous boat.

anyway, this little Honda has always started and run well enough. It still does. But on the last use I noticed a rather fast drip of oil down the side of the engine. Took it home and removed the cowling and ran it in a water butt and I’ve traced the leak to be the breather pipe that sits under the recoil mechanism. strangely , the oil is virtually pouring out its dripping so fast at idle, at high rpms the leak slows to a very slow drip or even stops. Any thoughts? I’m no expert but was wondering if piston rings have gone and it’s pressurising the crank case? But then it’s such an easy starter and I put my compression tester on it and it’s got decent compression.

seems a shame to scrap it as it starts first pull and has plenty of power. It’s kind of reliable but scruffy ..so perfect to leave on an old dinghy on the foreshore when I put my boat on a mooring for a few months in the summer.
but I can’t use it streaming oil like this it will run dry of oil in a few minutes and cause an oil slick too.

grateful for any thoughts or ideas to try.

Are you sure it's not the valve cover leaking, its made of thin mild steel and has a history of rotting away due to poor rust protection.

yes 100% I managed to start it with a rope rather than a recoil so I could run it with much of the casing off and I witnessed it coming directly out of the breather pipe. Just seems odd it’s suddenly happened unless a piston ring has become stuck

As already suggested maybe overfilled, or laid down wrongly.
Otherwise worn or stuck piston rings, worn cylinder bore or bad valve, as the fantastic captain suggests, but if it starts easily and runs well maybe not so likely.
Best bet would be to do a compression test.

Usually they leak from breather after laying down incorrectly...very well built engines. Cant be that bad...nearly 25 years old and still running well
