I have a ratty much rusty old Honda BF2. This is not the current model because this one has an impeller, which now needs changing. I have got this far...

...but the drive shaft needs to come out to get the impeller off. The shaft is stepped so the impeller won't slide off as it does in sensible designs like Yamaha and Tohatsu.

It appears from here...

... that the drive shaft (part 12) is simply splined at the bottom and should pull out, but for the life of me I can't shift it. Should it pull out? Surely I don't have to take the prop shaft out and the gearbox to bits just to change the impeller. If it's just stuck, how can I persuade it to unstuck itself?

If you look at the gearcase diagram you will see that there is an "E" clip on the bottom of the shaft (#25 in http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Honda/Outboard Engine/0/BF20F SA/GEAR CASE/parts.html ). AFAICS this means that you will have to get inside the gearcase and remove this clip before the shaft can be withdrawn.

What a PITA!

I can't imagine that part 14 will come out easily, if at all, on a 20 year old engine. What a daft design. The engine is air cooled; it's only the exhaust that has water cooling, and even that seems to be have been dropped on later models.

Ok, I'm in now. Had to take the gearbox apart. Fortunately, the part with no name (14 in your diagram) came off with only mild cussing. Getting that E clip off was entertaining in the dark recess of the gearbox housing. There was no way that the drive shaft was coming out without taking the gearbox apart. Unfortunately, I now need another part I didn't envisage, the gasket 15.

In the parts diagram the gasket (15) has 2 different part numbers, one with SUP in the name and the other with PRI. Anyone any idea what the difference is?

If you click on the part descriptions in the parts list you will see some more info regarding which models the parts fit. Looks like one fits pre 1997 models while the other fits 1997 and later models ?????
