Honda BF2.3 not idling well

Today the little Honda is in the water tank. It starts OK and can be got to idle but sounds a bit erratic - whadya think? Perhaps the slow running jet is fouled. But, where is it and how do you remove it. Is it under a black plastic cover?
Advice welcome.
 
Heeey ghostly, I've just had mine in pieces and sent my carb off to Steve66 for servicing (£35 for full service). I'll let you know how I get on. Easy to get the carb off:

  • You take the cover off
  • Take the fuel tank off (two nuts), empty that. (red circles)
  • Take off three nuts off holding the pull start on. (red circles)
  • Gently black plastic cover off (its sort of clipped into place)
  • Two bolts through the carb hold it on (red arrows) that pass through the air filter.
  • Unhitch the cables, and take off the fuel pipe, and it'll just come off the engine.

edit... hang on a damn minute. I didn't need to take the cover off at all in hindsight. :boxing:

I thought you needed to get to all four screws at the top of the carb, and you DON'T. The two bolts are all that hold it on.

Thanks for that Magical but I was hoping to get the jet out without removing the carb if possible.

Quicker and easier to take the carb off by removing the two bolts.

Beware the plastic air filter has two metal collets lining the bolt holes that can fall out.

Well worth cleaning the outside carefully before you open it as any dirt can get inside when you dismantle.

Recommend liberal spray with carb cleaner. You may find gunge in the float chamber.

There's a fault finding pdf somewhere on the honda site but the link I have doesn't work anymore.
 
Cleaned and re gapped the spart plug. Retested this morning and .............it was even worse. Humph!!!!!! So it is now with my local Honda dealer with instruction "it won't idle, fix it".
I'd like to have tracked the fault down but can't spend any more time on it as I have a few things to do on boat which I can't delegate.

I sent my carb off to Steve ghostly for the same reasons as you, on its way back to me now. I'll report on how it runs and fires up on Monday when it arrives. Good efficient cost effective and pleasant service from Steve... Just need to now test the beast!

Looooads of pressure :). Turns out it was an awesome job, the carb came back as promised in the next post (albeit to the wrong address to then get forwarded to our new wizard offices in Kings Hill, which was my fault) immaculate, with a new, slightly wider, main jet, ultrasonically cleaned, with a new bowl, and as I put it my other thread, it would have cost £80 plus in parts and lots of faffing about to go direct to Honda, Steve was £35 plus the postage (err about £3.50 I think), and he made a proper job of it as opposed to my ham-fisted attempts. It runs beautifully, so I highly recommend him. Also got lots of other advice out of Steve. I must say, I am a bit of a pessimist when something looks too good to be true, but I can only recommend Steve.

Now to anchor on the Swale and chug up in the dubber to the Shipwrights arms - cracking result.

Glad to hear yours now runs well. Mine is still with local dealer. I'd dropped it in with them before I'd heard of Steve so decided to let them continue although I'm going to send it to him to replace the plates bolts with stainless. He works in Shrewsbury so I can drop it off to him.
I'll keep you posted.

It has the next size jet than standard. I find the throttle response is a little better with slightly more juice going through it.
 
I can't find the idle adjust screw on my BF2.3D carb . Can somebody post a picture? The idle is running too high and the clutch won't disengage as I crash into the dock.
