I decided to change my Leisure 20 in June this year and I got a good part exchange deal for a Beneteau Antares with a 90 hp Honda. Unfortunately there was a problem with the Honda and to cut a long story short they could not give me a date when it would be repaired, last week they offered me a Sealine 210 with a Volvo Penta 4.3 litre engine, even though it is an older boat I like it my only concern is how much petrol the Volvo will use compared to the Honda 90. The dealer told me it will burn around 6gpm at cruising and will not be much difference between it and the Honda. A few years ago I had a Shetland Blackhawk which had a 75hp Mariner and it used around 8gpm.
Can anyone tell me how much fuel the Volvo 4.3 will use?

Yes, I used to have two!

The motor is a V6 Vortec and is built by General Motors and marinised by Volvo. It will burn approx 6 GPH at cruising speed - 2900 RPM. If you rag it, you can expect to burn 10 GPH.

These are two very different boats - are you sure you want something that does a very different job to the Antares? Are you sure you aren't being fobbed off?

The other difference between the two engines is that the Honda was designed to be a marine engine and what I mean by that is the internal water cooling passages are rot resistant - on the Volvo, they must certainly are not. And if the Volvo is 5 or more years old, then it will need manifolds and risers as they will almost certainly be blocked up with rust. Cost - £2000!

Think about what you are being offered and why it was you fell for the Antares in the first place. Peche-promenade or speed boat?

Oh, and fuel consumption...The Honda is 90 HP and the Volvo is either 205 or 225 HP. You don't need to be Enzo Ferrari to work out which engine will burn more fuel. I think the dealer is telling porkies!

It sounds like you are being fobbed-off / conned

I would thought the Antares was a much more desirable/saleable boat - I'm sure if you swap it, the Honda engine will suddenly become repaired, and the boat up for sale again .

Tell them to fix the Honda within 7 days, or you will take it elsewhere to be repaired, and you will take them to the Small Claims Court for the cost.

Who are these cowboys?

Thanks

Thanks for the info,
The initial attraction of the Antares was the Pilot House and after the engine had not been repaired as promised I was given the option of another boat because they reckon that the Honda could be knackered and they did not have another one to replace it.
I was given the option of my deposit back or look at another boat. I had a look and a run in the Sealine and thought that it may be suitable as it had a decent canopy and wipers to shelter from the elements. There are several problems which are being repaired before I get another run in it to make my decision, another option that was mentioned was that the Sealine could be exchanged for the Antares if the Honda was repairable.
