started engine today after lying on aft deck all summer. it runs after a few pulls then white smoke comes out exhaust and oil drips from cowling and black oil from exhaust. checked oil level, took some out and restarted. clean oil continues dripping from cowl and clouds of smoke. is it f..ked?
bought new in 2003, very lightly used.
any thoughts please!

Are you sure, really sure that it hasnt been stored wrong side down or in a leg up attitude?
If so, the head could have a lot of oil in it, which may have leaked into the open inlet valve, and create smoke/ oil coming out. This could blow the head gasket/crankshaft oil seals due to the extra pressure in the cylinder or oil in the crankcase.

Try running it slowly for 20-30 seconds, stop, check oil level, re run it, keeping it at very low revs. See what happens, it should stop smoking(badly) and dripping oil. If it doesn't stop doing both those things, it may well be Donald-Ducked.
I think you will know the answer in under an hour.

Had exactly the same on mine but i seized it after running for literally 15 secs.
Honda said it was a write off but i stripped and rebuilt it and it has been fine since. Afraid i don't know what caused the oil leak. It was always stored upright too.

except for perhaps 5 minutes when the boat was swept with a rogue wave lifting the dinghy and outboard across rear deck when it was inverted, upside down. other than this its always been stored on its side with handle in the air.
tried running for couple of minutes and thats when the smoke & oil start pouring out. the leg gets warm. should i just let it run hoping it cures or kills?

Yep, but dont run it for 5 minutes at a time.
The leg should get warm, as the exhaust travels down it to exit under the water.
Of course, there is no impeller as the engine is air cooled.

Note: the total capacity of the oil sump is 0.25l, but I doubt you will get much more than 200ml into it. Keep checking every time, as the level should stabilise, as the excess 'lost' oil runs away out of the exhaust as smoke or drips out of the cowl area.

Does the oil dripping look the same colour as on the dipstick? Should be......

Thinking about it a bit more. You didnt accidentally overfill it with oil? The Honda has a peculiar trait where the oil sight glass empties prompting panic as you dont think there is enough oil in it, and you add more. This is not good as the sump is overfull and the engine will try to hydraulic itself.

Serving Suggestion: Empty all the oil out of the engine, and refill with new. Try again as above. Any cheap brand 10/30 or 10/40 will do.

thanks fullcircle!
spot on with diagnosis. used outboard once and noticed low oil level. topped it up, then left it till now.
drained all oil out, then refilled with 0.25l oil. difficult starting then ran ok. job done.

Last year my 2.3 four stroke prop woulnt turn after leaving for 6 months. Brute force did it but then instead of the usually smooth acceleration it felt like it was changing into 2nd gear??? This year I could not move prop at all, either I have got weaker orn prob has got worse. Stripped bottom end, all OK, engine runs lovely (well its Honda), so must be down to centifugal clutch? Anyone know where I can get a workshop manual or Honda dealer on Crete?

Why don't manufacturers stick a "THIS SIDE UP" label on 4 strokes? (a bit like "Diesel" on car filler caps)
I have both 2 and 4 stroke outboards-S'pose simple answer is to stick a Dymo label on myself, but think it would be helpful if engine came with said label.
