My outboard was not used last year, but I gave it its winter service anyway. When I tried to start it recently, I could not turn it. Removing the recoil starter, I managed to turn it with a socket on the end of the crankshaft, but at the same place on every evolution it stuck. It can be turned beyond this point, but with considerable effort. I guess the problem must be in the piston-crankshaft area, as it happens on every revolution, and not every other - it is a 4-stroke. Any ideas please before I hand it over to a professional and wait for a big bill?

take the spark plug out, fill the bore with thin oil, say a 50/50 mix of 20/50 and parafin. put plug back in and leave it for week.

then take out the plug and try and turn it over.

if it turns get the oil out and try to start it.

if it wont turn over give it to a mechanic.

It sounds as though the piston (or rings) is binding at either the top or bottom of its stroke. Some light oil ( eg 2 stroke oil or fogging oil) in the cylinder after servicing would probably have prevented it.

Suggest you do as already suggested and give it a good soak in oil/paraffin or fogging oil and try again, perhaps gently working the flywheel back and forth around the tight spot. Be gentle, dont force it, or you may well break the piston rings or do other damage.

If it cannot easily be freed then a fairly major strip down may be necessary.
