I was given one of the above and I have got it going well.Great.

On starting. the thing nearly takes my arm and shoulder out . Any ideas that I can try to minimise the problem ?

Umhh? I have to ask if you 'gently' engage the pull start mechanism first, which ensures that it's engaged?
For the problem that I perceive is yours, I've never had that 'after' starting, but have had a few 'bad pulls' through non-engagement of the starter.
Apologies if I've misinterpreted the issue.

Yes, its definitely worth mentioning that.

I already own one of these which I have had for over twenty years. Normally a gentle first pull for full engagement and for getting the fuel round. The next pull a little faster but still relatively gentle which nearly always starts the engine.

With the latest one. , fast or slow makes little difference. Do you think there is a problem with the starting chord mechanism ? Difficult to see where else the problem could be.

I've not encountered this problem ever, my experience is much the same as yours with my own engine where it starts easily after the 3rd pull, every time, so I'm quite ignorant of this end of the engine.
However, this BF2D manual may help with the diagnostics on pages 32-34.

As a small engine specialist for over 60 years, most experience with motorcycles, it is possible the idle is too fast.

Had this with a Honda CB100 once. The young ladies Dad had speeded it up to so she would be unlikely to stall it.

He was successful with the non stalling, but the gearchange was awful and it had a vicious kickback when kickstarting.

A cost free fix if it is indeed the trouble.

Thanks. Will definitely try that.
If any other folks are having trouble, it's not only us.
