Honda 2hp 4 stroke

Hey all,

I've "inherited" a 2hp Honda four stroke but no manual with it. Does anybody know if this model has a telltale ? The engine doesn't appear to be overheating but i can't see any water leaving the engine, which makes me nervous.

Yes, the reason I bought one, no nasty sea water inside, just dont tip it on its side, keep it upright or oil gets into places it ought not to and then you have got troube

Minor correction, ahem.
You may leave it on its side, but only one way. There are two flat pads in the plastic waist moulding on one side of the engine, which are used for laying it flat. If you lay it the other way, you will allow oil to seep into the combustion chamber and fill the crankcase, causing a large pressure build up, blowing of crank seals and possibly hydraulicking the engine. So dont do it!

you will need to have the serial number of the engine handy, as there are so many variants.

No need to keep it upright, just lay in on the side with the rubber feet ( tiller upermost)

Further advice....run the engine regularly, in atank if you have too. Monthly about right. Always run the carb dry if you might not use it fore a while. Thwe carb will gum up easily and cost a fortune to replace.

I believe the older 2hp is water-cooled, the 2.3hp is air-cooled? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Not so- my 1990(ish) BF2 is air-cooled

I have an older BF2 and a newer BF2.3. Both aircooled, but the older one squirts water down its exhaust, and still has a water telltale. Newer one doesn't.

They must have changed design half way through the BF2 - cos mine doesn't have a tell tail and there is no water pipe running up the leg

The water comes into it somewhere - when i lift it out, it takes a few seconds for the water to drain out of two holes on the propellory end, but there is no tell tale further up the shaft.

So its an air cooled engine that uses water for something else ? Cool drinks for the little fella that blows the engine ?

Minor question - the forword says that the exhaust contains chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer and death. Is that just a threat to Californians or to the rest of us too ?

The early 2HP Honda had a water cooled exhaust only. The engine itself was air cooled. The later models and the 2.3HP was totally air cooled with no water cooling at all.

Ours does the same - but I assume it is just because the exhaust terminates in the shaft and then vents below the waterline
